My next-door neighbor, he’s passed away now, of course, but he had a mule, and he beat the holy dog crap out of it, and I don’t ever remember him ever replacing a belt on it.
He's fortunate that nobody reported him for beating his mule excessively. I've seen the Amish around here getting rough with their horses.

Anyone have a John Deere 590 here? The gentleman across the road from me put his barely used 2023 out for sale at a fantastic price, and since I have been considering one for a while now I am thinking about grabbing it. I looked at it yesterday and it looks like showroom condition. Windshield, roof, has the bigger tires and wheels, not sure what other optional accessories it has. Would be used for getting firewood from the woodshed, a lot of use during maple syrup season, property maintenance. No trail riding.

Who does John Deere have make their SxS for them?

I must admit, I have never heard of chery engines before, but I’ve never really looked at John Deere side-by-sides.

Everything I’ve ever seen about them seemed way overpriced to me.

I see Chery is a Chinese company so that doesn’t garner a lot of respect from me

I don't disagree on anything you said. The only reason I am even considering it is the price for basically a brand new machine, albeit 2 years old.

JD has used a variety of engines and most seemed to have fared well. You could also google "John Deere 590 engine grief" and see what pops up. Me personally, we would get a JD UTV but can't due to our high HP needs..

Yeah did a little bit of googlin' and they seem to be pretty solid engines

I’m assuming they are a clone of someone else’s engine, that seems to be the Chinese way

You should try google.

The John Deere Corporation makes John Deere Gator™ utility vehicles, which are designed and built at their plant in Horicon, Wisconsin. The company has produced these multi-purpose vehicles, often used on farms and worksites, since the first Gator was launched in 1993.

That may be US assembled, but where is the power train sourced?... no doubts on my Honda. Deere hasn't built small engines in decades.

Do they still make diesel SxS? My parents have on of the older 4x6 with the yanmar diesel. That thing is indestructible.

No….
As long as you are good with the Chinese stealing American or other countries intellectual property I suppose it’s fine!
That's where I have issues with Chinese stuff. They don't even try to hide that they steal our intellectual property and who knows what else.

I have a Kawasaki mule 4000 gasser that we really like. It can take a big payload in the bed and can be outfitted with an aftermarket sump lift. Also the bed can be converted in a 4 seater arrangement quickly. The down side is it’s slow - top speed seems about 25 or maybe 30, the ride is a bit rough I guess because of the leaf rear suspension (I run tires at about 6Psi and it helps ride). This is the second one we’ve had. The first one was a 2006 and the new one is a ‘22 or 3. Except fuel injection, better charging system / lights and maybe a body restyle - the drive train and all seem nearly identical. I do remember putting rear axle joints and bearing in the old one - not a friendly task - but both these machines are tough and have been in water / mud over the floor boards and beat around old tree farm ruts etc. extremely tough / dependable buggies

Unfortunately true, but the worst thing is typically "we" have sent them the specs to have them build for us, and possibly excepting the first few years (ie the 1980s-90s), "we" have known that they would make copies and sell them, but the short-term profits were so good that "we" didn't care about this - they lowered their costs significantly and didn't lower the price for the consumer.

I've said this before, but if a company has their product built in China, I have no sympathy for them when the Chinese are building similar-quality copies and selling them for reasonable prices -- I'm happy to pay full price for an actual American-made quality product, but if you have them build it and put your name on it, don't be surprised when I buy it from the builder instead, you gave it away.
