Our son has had 2 cars in his life, both my wife and I financed him, we bought the cars, and he paid us back in full (first car when he was 16)

He's 21 now, deployed overseas, and he sold his last car before he left.

There is a good chance he will be back 2nd quarter of next year back at his permanent duty station, which luckily is only 3 hours from us in another state.

1st car he bought, Mercedes, 2nd car Mustang (which he traded the Mercedes for). We think he's finally getting wiser and is now looking at something more practical like a Honda or Mazda (hatch back for extra room) but still good gas mileage and should be easier on insurance.

He's moving his criteria up to something relatively new (2025 model, less than 30K on the odometer and under $27K buy price). Both cars he bought in the past were less than 12K each, both with around 100K miles on them when bought. The mustang was easier on parts for him on what work he could do himself, and he figures anything "normal" like a Honda or Mazda will be less money on his end.

By the time he gets back to the US, he should have anywhere between 16-22K in his account (assuming he still gets paid in his words LOL).

He's had his own credit card since he was like 17, always had it paid off, and he's had a good credit score of like 725, but after he got into cars after he got his first one, started spending more money on working on them and sinking money for parts on them. Point is he never really had a high balance in his bank account after that, and what he actually puts on his credit card is now basically food (mess hall at PDS in the U.S isn't open) and car parts.

Both he and my wife and I would like for him to build up his independence from us on buying a car, and was wondering at what point does a 21 year not need their parents to co sign a car loan on their behalf? I thinking with the limited credit history, if he can't buy the car paid in cash in full, he would need our signature.

That said, his buddy on base in the U.S bought a somewhat new car for over 20K (in a larger city 45 minutes away from base) and I don't think he got his parents to co sign, but I also think the interest rate was still beyond kind of beyond stupid. If it would help with the interest rate, we would want to co sign because the one thing at this point we've instilled in him is interest rates are not your friend and our son would agree (so he says).

Usually what the auto lenders are looking for is employment & salary adequate to cover the car payment, more than what age you are.
I bought a 2020 Jeep Rubicon, lightly used with my 21 year old son’s and my signatures.
After about 3 years, he “refinanced” it into his name only.
After it was paid off, he traded it in for a GMC Sierra pickup-all in his name, as he has an excellent full time job and established credit now.

If he is in the service the federal credit union on base will finance young troops. Normally decent rates and easy approval.

I don't know what car prices are like where you live, but lotsa luck finding something that new that cheap here.

Things have probably changed, but I got my first used car loan when I was 18 - for $600. The bank called it a signature loan and I paid it back in under a year.

Sounds like you've done a great job with the lad and he's doing very well for himself. The problem is, that 725 credit score and his current government paycheck isn't going to help the situation. He'll be in double digit interest rate range.

When I was in the Marines, I financed a truck from a dealer when I was 19 years old by myself. No co signer. They wanted proof of pay, and a down payment. I forget what I put down, but think it was a couple grand. They also wanted insurance information, and it had to be full coverage to cover the cost of the truck.

In my experience, dealers want to sell you what they have. They have all sorts of ways to make that happen regardless of your credit history. Payments are all they care about, and I sometimes think that they like bad credit people better than good credit because they can charge higher interest rates.

100% I have heard that 10yr loans are now a thing.

I have a 7 year loan on my 2022 cab tractor. Zero interest and $654 a month payment. I'm not sure if I'd go ten years on a car or truck, but I haven't looked at the numbers. I always try to get the smallest monthly payment possible and then pay it off early with extra towards the principle every month.

Thanks for the response.

I looked at Navy federal and the one I still belong to and the interest doesn't look to bad.

Will see. Double digit interest rate is unacceptable at least to us, will see how he feels about it. If he wants to do it on his own with no co signature and pay that extra interest, so be it. That said, if he asks for co signature and he can save interest, I'd be all for it.

What I try to instill in him is when you finance, if you buy something for $25,000, it's not really 25K you're paying back, but a question of how much more you're paying back.

I would expect he won't need a co-signature having a full time jobs and a few loans under his belt.

Ne Hampshire is a lot like Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and Jersey. Nothing is really cheap.

Actually found a bunch of them in that price range with the mileage locally.

It's nice to know what your bank or credit union charges, but I've always found the best rates from the dealer I'm buying from. And if you drag it out and keep telling them no, they somehow find a better rate and lower monthly payment. Just don't ever tell them what you are willing to pay per month, always focus on the lowest price for the vehicle, and that you don't have to have it today, and you have other places that you want to go look for a similar vehicle. The last thing they want is for you to go somewhere else to buy from!!!

Eddie, like I tell people, the best time to buy something is when you don't need it. This gives you time and the worst thing you want to do is be in a rush to buy something, particularly a high ticket item.

Keep in mind, when my son gets home, he won't have a car and lets just say sad to say, he probably won't be taking his time. He should get 2 weeks R&R when he gets home, so that will be the time he most likely has and when he wants to get it done.

In hindsight, I should have never bought that truck when I was in the Marine Corps. This was back in 1984 and I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. The bus went to Oceanside and a few other places, but then you had to catch another bus to get to the Mall or where you wanted to go. Going out at night wasn't practical on the bus, so I wanted a truck. After getting the truck, I hardly every drove it because a group of us all went to town in the same car, that held a lot more people than my truck. It literally sat there for weeks at a time since everything on base was in walking distance. Then a year later I went overseas for Embassy Duty and those monthly payments really annoyed me. Fortunately, my parents were able to sell it for me while I was away. When I got out, I bought another truck from a different dealer and got started with my life. If I could go back in time, I would not have bought that truck or anything else while I was in the Marines.

That's just it, he has no loans on file. First two loans were paid directly back to us.
ho I see sorry for my misunderstanding, your right it is written clearly in post #1.... my brain simply went to co-financed .... In this case I would assume you will have to co-signed although he has a secure full time job plus a credit card history so might not hard to say... easy to say now i know but you should've got a loan for one of these prior vehicle but its the past now.... it took me two loan before I could take a loan without a co-signature one for sure but the second I think so I only had that full time jobs for a month or two so I think I had too for that reason.

Even if he can pay cash he should get a loan that way he built his credit score and it will spare you a bigger loan in the future. (like a house)

Those are his choices not mine.

Corolla XSE hatch back or Mazda hatch back. Not exactly certain of the Mazda model, but he pointed one out to me, and didn't look that bad IMO.
