I have a 2012 Deere 5065E that is dying on me after running it for a couple of hours. I normally don't run it that long as it's my hay bale tractor that I also keep the post hole digger on for fencing. Last weekend and the weekend before, I was using it to clean up some fencing that my neighbor took down, and the temps where close to 100 degrees. Engine temp was good. I was mostly just driving back and forth across my land to get a roll of wire, or some fence posts and bring them back to my house. Then it just died. Sounded and felt like it ran out of gas.

First time I added five gallons of diesel and pumped the manual fuel pump on top of the fuel filter. It fired up after a few tries and ran great. Yesterday, with the fuel tank still being full, it did it again. Just lost power and died. I pumped the primer on top of the fuel filter and got it to start, but it died on the way back. I did it again and made it back to the house where it's parked.

The fuel filter is a few years old, but doesn't have 100 hours on it. I ordered a new one that should be here tomorrow from Amazon. If that doesn't work, my next guess is the fuel pump. On my other tractors, it's on the side of the block and an easy thing to replace. For the life of me, I can't find it on this engine.

The engine is a 3029TPY22

I'm also looking for an inline filter somewhere but haven't found one yet. On my other tractors, they have them before the fuel pump, and another at the bottom of the sediment bowl. I don't see a sediment bowl on this tractor either.

The fuel tank is plastic, so I doubt rust in the fuel lines is the issue, but I'm going to blow out the lines anyway just to make sure.

What else should I be looking at?

Where is the fuel pump?

Is there an online source for parts that I haven't found yet?

Thank you

There is no fuel pump. Only the primer pump, which CAN be a problem sometimes. It's the first place fuel goes after leaving the tank. I have found all sorts of stuff in them that can impede fuel flow. Try that first. Just unscrew the pump assembly, lift it off and look inside. you might be surprised at what you find.

Thank you. Seems like Deere has a different way of doing things then I'm used to.

Sounds like possibly fuel cap vent not venting.

Try just loosening the cap if it happens again.

Check for good fuel flow from fuel tank to inj pump.

You could have bacteria in the fuel tank, which will float around and block the fuel inlet. There are treatments to break it up so that it'll flow through and burn up in the combustion process. I've seen it twice (physically, not hypothetically), in a truck and a Deere 790. I treat all of our fuel with biocide now, and it hasn't happened again.

I unscrewed the pump and removed the rubber seal. As you can see, there are some small flecks of something in there. I cleaned it out and wiped everything clean with paper towels.

I put on the new fuel filter and got it running again. I ran it for half an hour without any issues.

My fear is that it will happen again if I run it too long. Or even worse, it will start happening in shorter amounts of time.

If it happens again you'll have to dig a little deeper. If there's crap in the tank and lines you get to deal with it. Did you open the water drain on the back of the tank to see what shows up down there? What was under the diaphragm? That's where most of the stuff collects.

I didn't take a picture, but the fuel looked clean under the diaphram. I drained it and rubbed it clean with a paper towel. It turned dark brown where I rubbed the metal clean.

I didn't know about the tank having a drain. I'll look for it and see what happens.
