O'Reilly Auto for hydraulic hoses

What everybody is focused on is price. Do any of you know what it takes to stock the parts to make one hose?

Places like TSC, Farm and Fleet etc, are buying bulk from one place that are turning out massive amounts of simple lengths with only the basic fittings. Of course it will be cheaper.

If O'Reilly's is anything like NAPA not every location will do it and store's are individually owned. Which means it is on the owners of the store to make the considerable investment.

This is a very basic system. Absolutely will not cover the needs of every individual that might walk in with a hose that needs made

For those complaining about the price take a look at the fittings that one must stock to repair a hose. Not just the hose for YOU but for the person that has European equipment or just an unusual fitting. It is not straight forward. For the complainers why don't you just buy what you need and make your own. Problem solved.

In addition to the cost of stocking their is a skill set involved with making hoses. I've made them at the factory I used to work at and you can screw it up. You want a competent person making them.

I get all mine made at a custom shop. They recently took over the local Omni store and are striving hard to make sure that ANYBODY that comes in leaves with a new hose. Here is a recent build I did and you won't find these hoses on any store shelf and quite possibly could not have had them made at NAPA or even JD due to the fittings required. Other possibility is they could have made them but would require special order because they don't use enough of them. Combination of JIC, Metric, Adapters, several different size of hoses and lengths. I walked in with an idea and walked out with hoses and no it wasn't "cheap" but I got what I needed. Talking with the owner they have over $100,000 invested and going to invest more to make sure they can take care of everybody. Takes a long time to recoup the investment at $150 hose.

Want to complain about prices then support the Chinese turning out millions of basic hoses and go to TSC. Want to support local that can help you out when you can't find it on the shelf then suck it up and support local. Or buy what you need and make your own.

After breaking off a stabilizer hose by snagging a grape vine driving thru the woods one Saturday, Napa didn't have the right parts but knowing those people for years he put a different end on the shortened old hose and sold me adapter to get going.
I looked over my tractor and I bought a few different lengths and some different adapters so I could get it fixed then and there and order a new correct hose later.
I soon had a good assortment of hoses and fittings because when I added a top and tilt I made up with a valve from Summit, I made sure to order spares of those from surplus center.
Again while a hose may be 6 or 8 inches longer than needed to me it is like those compact spare tires. Good enough to get me going until a permanent fix is possible.

At surplus center prices I might have $200 in parts laying around but I am one to always have spare parts, filters oil etc on hand. I hate having to run to town and hope someone has what I need. I see it as money I saved from doing all my own repairs and servicing and reinvested. Some of that money is spent on new tools or beer for the garage fridge!

I have had 2 hoses made at O'Reilly and am having massive sticker shock, wondering if they are intentionally fleecing me. The last one - 8' of 3/8" with 2 JIC fittings was $152. Does that sound right?

I was looking on Tractor Supply's website and I can buy an 8' section of 3/8" hydraulic hose with male NPT ends for $35, and two 3/8" female pipe x 3/8" female JIC swivel fittings for $20, totaling $55+ tax. I wanted to get some opinions. I did not realize I could get it from Tractor Supply until after I bought it and installed it.

Ouch, bend over and feel the pain. NAPA also makes hoses cheaper than O'Reilly. TSC uses China hose. I do not know how good it is.

Custom hoses are always going to cost more.
What are the PSI ratings on the hose?
We install, and service knuckle-boom cranes, and some of the hoses go up to 8000psi

Hydraulic hoses have gone through the roof. I assume profitability is very high since every place with a bench is now making hoses. Gates is pretty much the Cadillac so that get a premium. The most expensive place to get them is parts houses. I can buy Gates through the wholesale dealer and am lucky to have friends with a compatible press.

I get mine made at my local Kubota dealer. Always reasonable and always has the fittings I need. I find tractor supply prices are ridiculous compared to anywhere else.

I had one done for my tractor 2 yrs ago at a local auto parts store. Custom made while I waited on a Sat. Morn. $25. Not sure we are comparing apples to apples, but...It was for the FEL.

The prices don't sound strange to me for a USA made top quality hose and custom crimped US fittings. My local hydraulic hose shop would be about the same. They use a higher quality hose than the ones my Kubota came with.

Tractor Supply hoses are made in bulk, probably in China. Their prices reflect that. Quality is probably average-to-low. I use them for some things.

If a hose is in a hard-to-reach location, or if if a broken hose in that location would cause an injury, I am going to go to my hose shop and get the best, pay the price, and smile all the way home.

In hydraulic parts, the best US products are way better than the overseas competition, but you do have to pay for it. One way you can save is to deal directly with the shop making the hose. That also makes sure they know exactly how to make the hose you need.
