Riktar The 425's I've had require a touch of choke when engaging the 60" deck when cold engine. My 425 requires that when cold and starting the 54" deck with the power flow attached. Pretty normal with the 425's. i.e. choke the same time as engaging PTO.

At 82, I now have a Stihl MS362 with 20" bar and a Stihl MS261 with 18" bar. Would not advise going bigger with bar length and both saws handle well and cut well. You are kind of rough on yourself about being 58. That is very young, IMO

Worried about clearance between chains and fenders on my 4300 when new. I solved the issue by buying new side chain and cross chain to make a ladder set that has worked very well since new (Wisconsin winters for 22 years). Made the chains to lay in the scalloped or hollow of the R4 tires.

Have to disagree that these chains "fit" the tire. Side chains shown are a few links too long for a good fit, and shows the extra slack, but agree they are clever tensioners. just sayin..

This is the compact utility 4520, and has this filter strainer.. Think given the right vs left difference, I'd want to know what the oil pressure is at that steering cylinder. Not overly expensive to check that out, but time consuming.

In place of the blown fuse, insert a 12v lightbulb.. soldered to an old fuse. That way, the short only lights up the bulb and allows you to track (or attempt to) down the short.

Welcome to TBN First, I'd try to tie down what fluid it is.. engine oil, hyd. oil, or coolant. And/or locate where the leak is coming from. Valve cover maybe? As you explore to find it, take some pics and post when you have a visual of the leak.

Never in 60 years have had an air filter "molested" in any way. Seems there must be a problem elsewhere that could use some attention. But I may be missing something.

The small difference in oil level between the two methods can't be significant to the operation, in my opinion.

Likely it is the height to make the deck linkage adjustments, then after that you can change the height to what you want to cut your grass. It will raise or lower from that adjusted position of 2.75. Don't think they are suggesting you mow your grass at 2.75", but I could be wrong.

Go for a JD 455, or 425. Older, but solid tractors. IMO better than the X series mower decks. Like the 54" but some can be found with the 48" deck. Good buy in the midwest for a 700 - 1000 hour 425 is around $3500. The diesel 455 another $1500 but well worth it IMO. Overkill for 1/2 acre, but...

NCAL Pls show us some pics of the blade mount bracket and the location of the adjusting bolts. Also, how it connects to the frame of the X590. Someone might see what the problem is that you are having. Have you checked tire pressure fronts and rears for exact same for both right and left?

When my 420 with the standard (wide front) would get light, would just use the wheel brakes to steer. Don't consider it an issue, but your experience apparently varies. Depends on the pulling load and lift connections.

Maybe the roll pin key #13 is sheared off? If that stiff, then maybe a problem inside the rockshaft control valve that has to be addressed. And "pto" is not the 3 pt lift arms.. it refers to the power take off, just FYI

Very well said ruffdog And The Thumb does precisely that! Easily detaches from the forks and stands upright when full open. So pallets stacked with firewood moved easily with The Thumb attached. Less than 100 lbs. Also easy to mount/attach to a bucket.

Have no problem with carpenter bees, but have had serious problems with woodpeckers. With two hole saws (2-7/8 and 2-3/4) can make the plugs to fit nicely into the holes bored out in the siding. Carpenter adhesive to hold the plugs in has worked well over the last 40 years.

Not the answer to the question, but already had the forks to go with my bucket and found them to be essential.. so adding The Thumb was a decision I made and think it easily takes the place of a grapple. Reasonable price, weight, and quick to hook up.

Suspect bad battery or cable connections.

There is no fluid at the fill opening, unless one has over-filled. So can't suck any oil out.

I just bought the amber beacon with the magnetic base. Easy, peasy. and not expensive and not in the way when in the woods or under low lying limbs, etc.

May not have a brake to stop the PTO from turning. If hooked to an implement and it doesn't turn then, I would not worry about it. That you can stop it with your hand (something I wouldn't do with a glove on) indicates it is not a problem to be overly concerned about.

I gather you have never been kicked that way, or you would not be saying such a thing.

Hopefully you learned to immediately lower the FEL to the ground whenever the rear wheels lift off ground. That is if you failed to have the correct ballast, or lifted the FEL too high, and was planning on making a turn.

Which model John Deere lawn and garden tractor is this? Doubt 10 years would be a worn starter.

Might help to state the model of the tractor and the size of the deck. Both should have tags giving that info along with the s/n. Add some pics too.

Connect a long length of #9 wire that will trail in the furrow you are folding the sod over into.. that will lay that tall grass into the furrow and make for a neat plowing job. Used to work great, and suspect it still would do the same nowdays.

Replace the top link with a short length of chain.. Much better, as it only has to function to raise the deck.

I just had a similar problem getting the wheel lug bolts free from a JD 1958 running gear. Well rusted rims and extra long bolts.. Used the best penetrant, called Blue Creeper. Has Kroil beat by a long shot. Small company in CT. called LogRite, famous for their new line of logging equipment...

From your description of your plan, looks like the right way to fix your rotary cutter so it will fit your tractor. I also use the chain from the top link to the back. Adapted mine to the iMatch quick hitch.

Another thing, when traversing a slope, always be conscious of turning down hill and applying the uphill wheel break at the same time to limit any tipping action. Don't just "ride it out" to see what might happen.

Welcome to TBN I have the 4300, but the 4310 with some more "computer" electronics may be different. (described this backwards, so deleted a line) Correction: The mid PTO needs to be engaged first to connect to the main PTO, then the clutch for on/off operates the main PTO.

The inclinometer isn't going to tell you anything that you want to know.. as to when you are "safe" from rolling over. And the reasons are already mentioned. Won't tell you where the center of gravity is at or going to be (hoe bucket too high, FEL too high, upcoming rock, upcoming hole, etc...

The slop was on purpose, to give two degrees of freedom. Your 1" pin may have been too big, and now with the larger diameter, something else will break. just sayin....

Did not get past the #15 or #16 test, so ordered the part #AM128878, control/fuse module. Hope that solves the issue. Reporting back.. that control/fuse module solved the problem. Easy install and back up and running again.

Does sound like splitting the tractor will be needed, and that shouldn't be too difficult. Here is a video that shows some rigging that will support the front end ahead of the clutch housing to allow rolling it away from the rear end. A jack and blocking will support the rear. Just some careful...

The seat switch is jumper'd and don't think there is reverse safety switch on it. Was moving forward when the engine just shut down. Will be able to check tonight if there is power to the shut-off solenoid. No activation of that solenoid when turning the key on. And the PTO switch is in off...

Not a sign of advance problem, fuel tank 3/4 full, mowing for about an hour and just suddenly the engine died. No solenoid click when turning the key. Will start checking if power at the fuel solenoid, as it does not react to the ignition key on. Will track down if power at that solenoid...

Fabricated bracket between plow A-frame mount and tractor hooks into the mid-mower front mount plates and tilts up to mate with the front weight bracket, held only with two 1/2" bolts.

Your pin is good to go. Plenty big for this job and attachment.

Could be bigger diameter, but nothing unusual about the pin shown in the pic.
