    bearing without axial tilt

I am building a simple root crops harvester attachment. The attachment has cutting discs in front of it to prevent weeds from jamming it. This is the almost finished machine. The problem that I am facing is that the bearings I used are not stiff. That is, they tilt on the shaft axis along...

welding tubes with a fillet weld

Thank you both for stopping by. I had not idea english has a special word for square pipe :) thanks for letting me know. LD1, you guessed it. The cutting disks are simply to large to be mounted a machine with a single tube.

welding tubes with a fillet weld

Hello everyone! I am designing a tractor implement for harvesting root crops. Similar to this one (), but stronger construction with cutting discs in front of it to prevent weed jam. These images will help you understand my question. The whole implement is 1400mm wide and the pipe at angle is...

ways to make cutting discs vertically adjustable

Hello everyone. I've made an undercutter implement that would need some cutting discs so that the weeds don't jam it. I was thinking of different mechanisms and decided to go with the one in the first picture. The top plate shown to the right is bolted on the holder tightly. I think this...

When to use long or short pins in 3pt arms?

Hi oosik, thanks for stopping by. I think I made a simple topic complicated :) I'll use category 2 pins only. Take a look at picture below. The red represents the link arm ball and the green represents steel from implement attachment hooks. There is a large difference in length of the pin and...

When to use long or short pins in 3pt arms?

I am making a bed lifter implement and would like to talk about pin length for lower (or upper) arms of 3pt attachment. Take a look at these to examples. The important dimension is B. It is 5in(~130mm) in second image and 3 3/4in(~95mm) in the third. Since this is for category 2 tractor, I...

Why do PTO drive shafts have grooves?

Ahh I see. Sorry for newbie question. Never attached a pto before.

Why do PTO drive shafts have grooves?

Thanks. I case I haven't made the question clear. These are the grooves that puzzle me:

Why do PTO drive shafts have grooves?

Basically the title - Why do all PTO drive shafts have grooves? The groove radius varies a little, from 6.7mm to 8.3mm (6.8mm to 8.4mm according to the book I am reading).

Pneumatic seeders - how is suction created?

I'm looking to buy the vacuum unit so I can play around with it maybe come up with something useful. This is out of fun, not out of need. I am sorry if embedding link to google search looks spammy. I am trying to show you guys that I've done research and hopefully save you some key presses...

Pneumatic seeders - how is suction created?

Thanks. Thanks. You think regular fluid pumps with a constricted section are used to create suction?

Pneumatic seeders - how is suction created?

I am interested in what kind of "vacuum" pump is commonly used in pneumatic seeder systems. I've googled tractor pto vacuum pump and surprisingly little useful results were returned. From videos I saw, it looks like a centrifugal pump. I googled that too and most hits are for transferring...

crazy steel prices - should I import from China?

I recently bough a s355 steel pipe for 3.3€/kg (~1.8USD/pound). I only needed 4 feet and the full implement weighted only 300 pounds so I didn't complain too much. On the other hand, if I were making a 2000 pound subsoiler (on my bucket list), then the current price of steel is unacceptable...

How do manufacturers paint tractor attachments?

I've done my first spray paint job recently. The steps I took were: -wirebrushing surface rust -wiping everything with a thinner to remove oil -applying rust converter -prime painting -enamel cover painting I must say, it took me a lot longer than I initially expected. That lead me to believe...

first time painting - should I grind off the thin surface rust or just apply rust converter?

Thanks for very interesting comment about dry air. We currently have 95F weather and around 30% relative humidity. I attached an air prepping unit to the compressor (the one that has 2 cylinders, one for oil removal and one for water + pressure regulator) and not a single drop of water was...

first time painting - should I grind off the thin surface rust or just apply rust converter?

Thanks for all the good and helpful replies. I didn't mention in my queston (I didn't know it matters at the time) that half of the implement is hardox steel that comes with a primer already on it with only small scratches.. Some not so small areas of S355 steel are also rust free. The pipe was...

first time painting - should I grind off the thin surface rust or just apply rust converter?

Hello everyone! This is my first time spray painting steel. My plan is to use wipe the implement with a thinner, spray rust converter, use a two component primer followed by two component enamel paint. I've been told I don't need to remove the surface rust because it is so thin. What are you...

    preparing metal for electroplating

I agree with you about short lifetime of zinc. Either paint or zinc will get abraded away. Its just that if zinc is gone, the implement is hardly visually degraded compared to if paint is gone. That is, if kept in dry place so rust doesn't form quickly. That is my reasoning.

    preparing metal for electroplating

Hello everyone! I've made a tractor implement to assist me with picking up onions and root crops, similar to this one: I was thinking of painting the sidewalls and the bottom lifting blade, but regardless of paint used, the abrasive nature of soil will remove the paint, leaving the implement...

paint job - tips & tricks for beginners

Hello everyone! I am getting ready to do my first paint job on a tractor implement I made. I watched a few videos and the process looks straightforward, but I feel like that there is more to it. I wonder if you have any tips or tricks on for example, which grit size to use for sanding and...

Metal finish on parts in contact with soil

What is the usual metal finish used on parts that are in constant contact with the soil, for example subsoilers? I've ordered hardox 450 for my project and it has an ugly red surface, covered with promotion messages. This is my first time using it. I expect paint to wear off in the first few...

how to design for step pins

I need to weld the pin holes to the 3pt bar for lower link arms to attach. This is the pin that I got. It is a step pin for both cat 1 and cat 2 tractors. The dimensions are in millimetres. I'd like to double check if this pin is designed to be used with 3 connections or just 2? With...

How much distance should be left between lower pin holes and 3pt bar?

Hello everyone! I am wondering if there is a standard specifying how much space should be between lower pin holes of the three point hitch and the bar for category 1, 2 and 3? Take a look at the image to see what I mean. From the book I am reading.. the standard specifies arm span and width of...

Maximum horizontal distance between lower and upper link holes

Hello everyone! I am constructing a 3pt hitch for an implement and was wondering if there is a limit on how far apart should lower and upper link holes be? Take a look at the image from the side: My current setup has 16" (40cm) vertical distance and 6 1/2" (around 16cm) horizontal distance...

undercutter / bed lifter - how thick and which steel to use?

Thank you all for taking your time :) I've contacted bulldozer reseller companies around me, and it amazes me how the cutting edge is literally twice the price as in the USA. Gotta pay the VAT I guess. So my choice is between regular steel and hardened steel. I believe regular steel is marked...

undercutter / bed lifter - how thick and which steel to use?

Hello everyone! I am planning to build an undercutter/bed lifter tractor attachment. The goal is to slide a slanted board 10-12inch (25-30cm) deep into the ground and lift the soil just enough, so that you don't need to use a shovel to dig out root crops such as garlic or carrots. This is how...
