Wow! That's a very nice upgrade from my 2006 2500HD (6.0L gas) which is only rated by GM to tow 10,000 lbs... and struggles at times to do that!

Time for me to trade up too???

There's a great big difference between what is marketed by the truck manufacturers vs. what is reality.

I'd say "go with reality", in what you find on the TBN forum. Whatever the manufacturers market..discount it by 30% or more; just to be safe.

I recently had a 2002 GMC LB7 engine and worked it to its limit with a fair load of a single axle trailered boat. I was disappointed with the max towing performance. I was always wanting more out of the throttle. It got me there and back (other than the injector failures) but was just not what I expected.

This 2007 with the LBZ engine that I recently bought is another story.

I am still wanting a light truck with a 500 HP Cat.

What would the price be for that? Let's see...right now it's $8200 extra for a Durmaxx/Allison combo. Same truck with a CAT engine...at least $25,000 or more for that option; assuming they would ever have that combo.

Not to highjack this thread but I'm currently considering the same senerio going from a 6.0 PSD to 6.0 vortec GMC. I don't tow all the often but I would like to be able to tow a 22ft 14k flat bed. The trailer itself will likely weigh around 4k and I will probably haul 6-7k on it. Do you guys think the GMC 6.0 would handle that? I know it's not going to tow like my diesel but I can't justify the added $$$ for the Duramax/allison engine/tranny. I haven't towed as often as I thought I would and I'd like to get out of this ford while the warranty is still good. Oh it's a bumper pull trailer

Matt, Been looking for the answer to both our questions for the past few months. I've learned one thing, that's not to trust some salesperson, who has no experience in towing, quoting some stats. Sort of like quicksand. It gets more deep ($$$) as you try to find the right combination for your needs. You are towing the same weight I am. Right now,I believe any gas vehicle is on the edge. (3/4 to 1 ton). Let me know if I'm wrong. Would love to pick up a 6.0 chevy.

Well, I have a brand new 6.0 chevy at work and it's seems plenty powerful. But I'm famous for always wanting more power. I pitched the idea to my better half and she even said wait and get the duramax after I save the $$$.
I'm sure she's right but there must be some happy medium. I see lots of guys towing huge 5th wheels with the 6.0 vortec. Surely it can't be the much of a slouch.

The "Better Half" is absolutely right! :) If you can possibly afford it, get the diesel. Sure wish that I had.

I just traded my '05 Ford Crew with the 5.4 for the Toyota Tundra DoubleCab with the 5.7, tow package and six speed auto, with 4.30 gears;what a difference:D The power is truely amazing, the trans silky smooth and the mileage better than I expected; 17.4 empty, but only have 750 miles on it. If you can wait I'll give you a better critique in about a year:eek: The Ford was a real mistake; the 5.4 3 valve never performed up to my expectations and the tranny is suspect. I can't wait to hook on to something with this beast and give it a workout and it has a 10,300 lb rating

I would say it go with diesel, a big toy hauler 10K is also a huge catch all of the wind possible, in addition to the weight. Since you have a toy hauler and in Northern CA, I am sure that you will be going up and down a few hills to use your toyhauler. Pulling 10K with a smallish gas motor up I-80 would be rough; doable but frustrating.

I had a 91 Chevy HD with a 350 gasser, it was rated at 8,500 for towing off of the hitch as I recall. The most I towed was about 6,000 and I am glad it was mostly flat and less than 100 miles.

If you were towing short distances and not that often over mostly flat terrain. Gas is fine, but if you go from your current diesel to a gas motor I think you will be dissapointed.

You could ask the dealer for a test drive of towing your trailer, I doubt they will say yes, but it won't hurt to ask.

Matt,

This will probably go against what others will tell you, but based on what you have indicated I would say get the 6.0 with 4.10 axle ratio. From looking at the link that I posted earlier at 11,000# you would have a minimum of 1,000# reserve capacity. The new body style uses a 6speed transmission which will help with the go and the brakes should be the same as the diesel. You already indicated that you know that it will not be the same as the diesel, so don't be surprised with the power difference.

Keep in mind that this recommendation is based on seldom towing and a total trailer weight under the limits for the truck. If for any reason you think that you might need to haul more, more often, more hills that what I have seen in CT, then get the diesel.
