The overbearing precautions are now coming to light and I totally understand the reason for such requirements. My tank is in, the water lines are all done and all I have left to do is bury the lines. BMAC if you could zoom in I am sure you would see some Mexicans crossing our border near my property since the Border Patrol was MIA all last week.. as they are about 99% of the time. Donais, I am glad your all right and the kids are happy. Wish I could help with the water, I have 10,000 gallons sitting on top of a hill doing no good for anyone right now. If we only had a way to get it to Ramona.

hey saltman hope you didnt have to leave....i live in ramona. been a refugee since sunday at 9:00 pm ish .got to alpine(normally 40 min away) at 2:30 am finally got to come home on sat. still cant use the water. boy it sucked not being able to go home.. took 7 horses in a 4 horse trailer( three minis in the dressing room). the kids loved it they thought we were just camping.

For all of you folks living somewhere east of Los Angeles, fyi that southern California is basically a semi-arid desert. Derik's place is the way everything looked here back when Coyote's ruled the roost. Whenever I travel east, I make a point to look out my window, point at the green things and say 'hey look, Mo, those are trees!'

The county in San Luis Obispo has a formula to use for determining the size of a water tank. It is based on the cubic area of the structures that are under protection of the given water tank/attached hydrant. My 4000 square foot house needed less than 5000 gallons of storage. San Diego went with that huge requirement because of the fire losses that you talked about.

You're going to be able to water a whole BUNCH of fruit trees with a 10000 gallon water tank! Maybe I missed it - what is your well production?

Water in these tanks don't stagnate (as long as there is any use at all - or over a small minimum). It has something to do with a relatively small surface area, and the overall enclosure. Physics or biology that I don't fully recall at the moment. I treat my well water because of its hardness, not because of its purity. My water is as hard as nails.

Plenty of folks enjoy the desert beauty. I myself like nice green trees. But the world would be a dull place if everyone were the same.

I've got about 20 employees working in Rancho Bernardo. Our plant was shut down and many had to evacuate their homes. We are blessed that no one lost their houses, and no one was hurt.

Anybody know what the big fire trucks carry? I know when the fire marshal came up in his small truck it only held 350 gals. So his (Derik's) tank is a supplement for the trucks anyway, right?

Glad to hear you were not affected by the fires. I remember about a dozen years or so ago that Tom Sellick's ranch was spared by the fires storms of the year by some plants he had around his place. Maybe somebody else knows what they are, but these plants will actually stop a fire to some degree.

a truck or a tanker? the rural volinteer fire dept has a seperate tanker truck that rolls out on most calls .... 3500 gallon with a 5000 gallon holding pond they can set up... so they will set that up... pump the 3500 gallons into it, then run 5-10 miles down the road to a good hydrant, fill up and run back to the "pool"

For my upcomming house burn, they said it would be easy because we are within site of the new water tower. "a really good hydrant at the bottom of the tower" the chief says.... i ask... what does that mean? "we can fill the tanker in about 5 mins once we get it hooked up"

That "pool" is called a drop tank. And bringing water to the tank with tankers is called a "tanker shuttle". ISO (Insurance Services Organization) will rate a fire department on it's tanker shuttle. They base the needed fire flow for a department's coverage area on the largest 5 buildings withing a 5 mile radius of the department.

It is possible to substain a 1000 GPM flow using a tanker shuttle and tankers. The water source for the tanker shuttle can be a dry hydrant (based in a pond or lake) or a wet hydrant (fire hydrant).

The tankers dump their water into the drop tank with a 10" dump valve. The dump valve is sized to dump the capacity of the tanker within 3 minutes. They then drive the tanker to the water source to refill. With a dry hydrant a portable pump will be used, usually on a trailer, or another fire engine. With a fire hydrant the water system pressure will fill the tankers.

Water is drafted by a fire engine out of the drop tank with a 6" hard suction.

This is a very common way to fire rural structure fires.

When my tank was put in about three years ago The reqirement was that it had to be at least 50 feet from the house but not more than 150 feet. I am in Riverside County so maybe the requirements are different in San Diego???
