10,000 # vs 14,000# trailer for compact tractor

I was thinking about a lot of the same things when I purchased my trailer. The other nice thing about the 16" 8 lug wheel is the spare from the truck will fit the trailer. The Ford center circle may be a bit bigger so the inverse is not always the case.

I am just north of you in Sagle. Even with the shipping cost I saved money and got a better product by buying a custom made trailer from Georgia. I can provide more detail if that's something you are interested in.

Kaufman Trailers, in Lexington, NC. has excellent pricing, including shipping.
They have no dealers! They ship direct!
Their trailer construction is widely praised, and they will build anything you want.
I have a new 20' construction trailer, but it is not a Kaufman.
If I were to buy again it likely would be.
Kaufman is the best bang for the buck.

Not expert but here's some of my experience........I like sides on my trailer where i can add 2 x 12's so as to haul gravel, rock, dirt etc. Going to the quarry to pick up 3 tons of gravel makes the trailer much more useful. Then there are the times when my kids needed to move their furniture from place to place. It's real handy then. An, Oh yeah, I trailer my CUT around for mowing, tilling etc. 724.JPG
I wish that it is about 4 feet longer however.
Cheers,
Mike

Very nice trailer!!!

Thanks. It has worked great so far and tows like a dream. The price was right too at $3,400 for a 20' 10K trailer with spring assist ramps and spare tire with mount.

I used to deal in trailers part time and here is what I have.

I skipped the tilt. I haul too many multiple item loads. The tilt does not work well for that. I am also not a fan of a Dove/Beaver Tail. I prefer a flat deck.

I currently have 2 trailers. Both are flat deck. One has slide in ramps and the other has ramps that will fold flat, stand up, or come off the trailer. To me this is the best. I can Lay the ramps flat on the deck for when it's empty, hauling long stuff, ect. Really cuts down on wind resistance.

My buddies 16+2 10k trailer, that's when we transported my dump truck and tractor and when I used it to get hay. 10k would be minimum, 14k would be nice but could do without. I have yet to find a load too heavy for his trailer that I need to haul, usually it's a lack of truck first.

His weights 2750lbs according to the dealer he bought it off. He paid a hair over $3000 for it, I wana say $3200 plus tax

My best estimate is my 4320 weighs 5200lbs, I had some people on here find out for me with the loader and cab.

I might be the oddball here but I have a Big Tex 12ET trailer. I went with the 12K version, though I am not sure they make them anymore. I got mine about 2 years ago.

So I finally made a decision. I'm going to get the Big Tex 14ET-18' . That's their 14k, 18' non-tilt equiptment trailer. The one I'm getting has the Mega-Ramps- (these things are huge and solid looking) it also has a slight 32" dovetail.

I spent a lot of time at the dealer looking at this and the Big Tex 14-TL tilt that I mentioned in the first post. I really like both, but I think that I'll get more versatility from the non-tilt. I spoke to Big Tex customer service and he told me that they are both equally durable. The non-tilt weighs about 500 pounds less than the tilt- he said all the extra weight goes solely into making it tilt, not making it any stronger.

Another big selling point for me was that the one I'm getting it on sale right now for $4300. That seemed like a pretty good price, even compared to prices on the same trailer around the country.

I did check out the Kaufmann trailers- they seem real nice on paper- pretty comparable to the Big Tex. Shipping out to me was $600, which isn't bad. That said, they did not seem better than Big Tex (at least the models I was looking at) and there was not much of a cost savings over the Big Tex that I'm getting on sale. So I figured I'd buy the Big Tex since I can get it right now and see it in person first.

I'm pretty excited- will be picking it up next week. I'll let you guys know how I like it.

Get a longer trailer. You will not have enough room to carry a rotary cutter and your loader at the same time.

Get a 24' trailer. The longer trailer will not handle much different and you will be able to upgrade your equipment at a later time.

A longer trailer is ALWAYS better....except in some cases, when it is not!
I bought a 20' - 14K trailer, and really wanted a 22' or 24', but.....
I store everything inside, and 22' or 24' would not leave me short of space for me to store a car ahead of the trailer.
The 20' deck just barely works for my TLB.
I put the tractor bucket forward, with the bucket edge down against the stop rail of the trailer deck, and the bucket open face forward.
I curl the hoe as much as possible, and it rests solidly on the back of the beaver tail.
Very luckily, the weight distribution works out well also.
A 2' longer trailer would have eliminated one entire vehicle spot in my building.
The trailer has plenty of length, if I instead, chose to load my FEL Ford 1920 with bush hog.
I would have preferred longer.... but in this case,.... longer would NOT have been better.
At my age, my next "upgrade" will likely be an "underground grade".
