It is easier for the radical groups to pick on people with mental issues, or those that are so alone they look for any contact. Isis and their like prey on the weak.
I honestly don't think people are radical in general.

We just read a story and make assumptions with the "facts" presented without knowing the entire story.

End of the day, being a investigative news reported probably pays jack squat, so online "news" just repeats itself (because it's fast and easy) and people make assumptions based on the info presented.

Reading up on the guy in the Vegas bombing, seems like a good guy who served his country proudly, and he didn't want to kill anyone per what he did, but at the end of the day he made the news.

Anytime a 18 series MOS wants to take out people in a bomb, when I first read the news story, I KNEW he didn't want to kill anyone because he would have if he wanted to.

However, we all made assumptions when we read the news story when it first came out. And what do we turn to? We all know it's got to be Muslim extremists...

Losing a job or loved one sometimes triggered but by far saw many guys say to hell with it and drink themselves to homelessness after a breakup…
I've told my own boys if you ever get sick of life, just don't get to the point where you kill innocent people because of the problems you have.

Don't know of a human alive that doesn't have problems of some sort...

The Vegas and NO guys were very different.
The NO one wanted to take out as many as possible, even had bombs in coolers stowed in various places with remote detonators and drove in with an Isis flag on his truck.

Both guys were different, but because the one guy had a Isis flag in the truck, you're assuming the guy was a "loyal" ISIS follower.

The reality is if you read about this American born guy who served in the military, his life sucked and was crumbling in on him. What he did IMO was embrace an ideology because of where his life was at IMO.

Please note, the ONLY reason why you know the guys were different was because more information came out after the fact. EVERY American assumed both acts were terroristic acts after they happened.

Just saw on the news....The Cybertruck guy was inspired and worked up by a bunch of conspiracies like the drones and china balloons.

The Vegas attack did not make sense to me at all for many reasons, but mainly because the truck did not really explode. I really questioned if the guy was in the Special Forces because of what happened and some initial reports. Then more information came out and it was obvious he did not intend to hurt anyone. It is sad that his life ended the way it did.

One of the YouTube channels I watch, Shawn Ryan Show, was sent some email about the guy. I have not watched the videos about the situation though. The reason I mention Shawn Ryan is that he was in the USN Seals and a CIA contractor. He interviews other people who have had similar or the same career path. PTSD, drug use, alcohol abuse and mental health has been covered quite a bit.

Over time, terms have been created such as Combat Fatigue, PTSD, and Shell Shock which I think is really TBI(Traumatic Brain Injury). These things are really separate issues, with some overlap I suppose, but someone could have all three based on one incident/ambush/fire fight. At least today we are recognizing these issues and trying to do something. In the past, not so much. Shawn Ryan and some of his guests have had some success using non traditional treatments.

I have worked with people who had at least some symptoms of PTSD. Two were LEOs who had been in shootings and one was a Vietnam veteran who was a LRRP. I don't think PTSD was recognized, or had much treatment, when the one officer and the Vietnam vet where impacted. I know I recognized the signs in the officer, as did others, but I don't think there was treatment available, and ceratinly not what is available today. Mental health care is certianly not what is should be in the US, it is better than in many countries, but it needs to be better.

On a personal note, a son of ours died of a drug overdose. My wife and I were first hand observers of people accusing us as parents as being bad parents. Personally, I'd like to think that is not the case, but per some, we were already convicted of being bad parents on facebook.

Go figure.

Decades managing rentals provided insights I otherwise probably would not have had.

A few hit bottom and did turn their life around but it was rare.

I saw one of three things happen… death, prison, come to Jesus moment…

Losing a job or loved one sometimes triggered but by far saw many guys say to hell with it and drink themselves to homelessness after a breakup…

Mental health care in the US needs to be better. This is is really difficult since it is just not a matter of money and trained staffed, both of which are needed, but of laws and because of the actions of the person in need.
  1. We have some people who are mental and should not be walking the streets because they are a serious threat to others and they need to be in a prison or secure institution.
  2. There are other people who simply can't take care of themselves and need to be in an institution.
    1. I used to know a woman who cared for adults with serious mental disabilities and it was heart breaking to see people in their condition. Thank goodness there are people willing to care of these people in need. These people had to be in 24 hour a day care. They needed to be in an institution since they simply cannot take care of themselves.
    2. But there are others who have serious mental issues, and while not a threat to anyone, they can't function in society. These are the tough one's to treat/handle. What do you do with an adult, who has a law degree, is a member of the bar, but can't work because of his mental health and is home less? He wants to live on the street. What does society do?
  3. Some people have disabilities that don't require 24 hour care but they need to be in a group home type of environment. We have a group home for men in a nearby town and I heard there is one for women. The men can do some work, and take care of themselves to some extent, but they need help. Without the home, these men would be on the street and I think would quickly die or be sent to prison.
  4. Other people need to be put into care for a short time to get them over a rough spot in their life. They can be given some care and move on in life.
    1. This sort of treatment, especially for children, is hard to get and there is a shortage of staff and facilities.
  5. And many people need some mental health care at an office or video call. Just need some help and guidance to get over life's rough patches.
  6. Then there are people, many who have drinking and drug issues, which are almost certainly a sign of other mental health problems. What does one do with them? If they cross a legal line, off they to to jail/prison or maybe an mental institution, but surely it would be better to catch the problem before that point. Which is one of the problem with mental health care, the person who has the issues, has to WANT treatment. Too many times they don't want treatment, even if it is available.
We have too many family members who should be in prison and should never have been released. They have caused, and will continue to cause, great harm to others. At least one has some serious mental issues. We have others who have had drug problems, which led to crime, mental institutions, jail/prison, and eventually, death. One seems to have changed things around but time will tell. Others are might get it together but I suspect they will not. None of this is easy. Many of these problems start at school or at home and in theory could be stopped early. But other people are born with problems, even if they are not obvious, and those are even harder to treat.

We have seen family members who have mental, criminal, and substance issues that follow generation after generation. I tried to derail this generational train wreck twice but one is really limited with what one can do. You can see it is going to happen but it many times can't be stopped. Then there are the one offs, so to speak, someone will pop up with a problem out of the blue. We have seen other families deal with this and it is horrible. I know one family who lost a child, and I am sure they blame themselves at some level, but from what I could see, they made good decisions. Sometime good decisions are not good enough but it is all we have.

Good Evening CTC,
It's a fun, beautiful place to visit, but it is now also very dangerous
We have been there twice and enjoyed it but any place that has large crowds today seems to be a dangerous proposition! 🥲
