Most of the rest of the world is on diesel. We are the king of gasoline. Fuels are global commodities, and will go to the highest bidder. And a LOT of the diesel we make here goes outside the country. So, we pay here for diesel what everyone else is paying for it around the world. The only difference at the pump between countries is the fuel and surcharge taxes imposed by their respective goooberments. Yeah, there is some nefarious goings on behind the scenes somewhat, but it is mostly market driven. As for the difference between gas and diesel, it is pure, simple demand. There just isn't the demand for gas around the world as there is for diesel. The ULSD diesel is a little more expensive to make, but the reason it gets such a high price here is simple. If I run a refinery in Louisiana and can make a non-ULSD diesel that another country is happy with, I will make all of it they will buy. I will only make what I need for the U.S. market to keep things running, but you are going to have to pay more since the supply vs demand will be tighter because I am moving more non-ULSD diesel to other markets. Even Europe's ULSD sulfur ppm requirements are a little higher than the U.S. And by shipping a product out of the country, I would not be subject to all the regulatory nightmare stuff that is imposed on me here in the U.S. Read that... I can move more product and make more money by moving it to other markets where they are happy to get what I make and are not trying to tie my hands behind my back. What would you do?
Yeah, there are fishy things going on behind the scenes. Has been since the dawn of time. But that is only a piece of the puzzle. Most everything is economics, pure and simple. If I make widgets that someone will buy for $2 each and not tax me and my ancestors to death for, vs selling them in a market where I will only get $1.50 for them and will be taxed to the point where even my ancestors scream for mercy, it is a no-brainer. You want to see what is fishy going on, then first look at the gooberment regulatory mess first.
But always remember... your gooberment cares for you!
