Good question, when was it overhauled?
Also Scott, if I just add up some things, if he want 7-8k for it, probably need new rubber if it has been sitting out, pluse 1 - 2k in clean up repairs, probably got some critters in the wiring, add ROPS, I am up in the 10 to 12k range.
I have found a very nice looking 1086 and having it checked out mechanically. Still looking though, and thanks for you help. Bet I know where that school is.

Slippy,

I am a two time University of Rio Grande Alumni.

I was at his house looking at some parts for my 881 and he told me that he had it overhauled and put about 5 hours on it and it has been sitting since. We got on the subject because he has mostly Case tractors and there was this big Massey sitting there near his house. I think he told me the tractor might have between 2k and 3k total hours on it. That is not alot of hours for a tractor that size. If you want more details I can give him a call and let you know what he says.

I am not sure how much the 1086 is going for or how much you have to spend. I figured since you were having a hard time finding a descent deal and you are in the area that I would throw that out there for you.

Scott

Scott: Thanks again. Sure, I would be interested. Does he have a camera so you could email me some pictures? I will know this week if the deal on the 1086 will go through.

I forgot to mention.. make sure your mower input and tractor output pto match..lots of 'AG' tractors are 1000rpm pto.. or are 540/1000 swapable either by 'lever'.. or stub change out...

Morningwood: yes would be interested in talking to him. Send me a pm with his info and I will call him, or what ever he prefers. I am getting pretty close though on a 1086 that looks and runs like new at what I think is a good price. More than what I wanted to spend, but if I am ready to get rid of it in a couple of years it should do pretty well. Something that has been sitting for that many year I would be concerned about seals drying up, leaks, electrical problems, etc., but would be interested in looking. Would only be interested if it has a ROPS though.

I have looked at the JDs, in fact the whole line of them. Anything that I have found that is in decent shape is 2-4k more than IH, Ford, etc. Not saying they are not worth it, but others are as easy to get parts for and less money.

I have let tractors set up 4-5-6+ years and started them with nothing more than a new battery. I bought a 1105 MF that had set up for close to ten years. I had to replace the slick rear tires and take the fuel tanks off and clean them out good. Other than that, nothing but a new battery was needed. It turned out to be one of the best tractors-and undoubtably the biggest bargain-I ever had. I gave $3800, replaced the tires, used it about three years, and sold it for a substantial profit. I wish I still had it. One thing that was so surprising about it was that it was one of the cleanest tractors I ever had. It did not have a leak, oil, fuel, or hydraulic oil, that I can remember.

So, while you can't expect to have that kind of luck buying a tractor that has set up for 15 or more years, don't just automatically assume it will require a lot of refurbishing, either.

Let me give him a call within the next few days and see if he can give me some more information. He lives about 45 minutes from me so I can see if he can snap some pics and email them to me.

I will keep you posted.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott: Thanks.

Soundguy: Yes, the 1086 has two rear pto shafts, one for 540 and the other for 1000. The batwing is 1000 rpm. Because of the tip in this thread, I actually counted the splines on the mower shaft. There are 26 if I recall correctly. There are also 26 splines on the 1000 rpm shaft on the tractor. So, should be in good shape there. But again, thanks for the heads up.

Redlevel: I guess that is what puts all the guess work in buying used. But, knowing my luck, I would not be as fortunate as you have been. I have learned to expect the worst and hope for the best.

Bad news, I talked to the owners son and he spoke for the tractor already but I guess dad does not know that. ;)

If you can get a nice Ford TW for the right money look no further , Although you probably dont need all that power and weight making a ford 8210 a good choice ,6.6 liter 6 cylinder ,95 pto hp but capable of a lot more .
