They are called 'power adjustable simply because you use the tractor power to adjust the rim spacing, either forward to extend or reverse to retract. least that applies to every tractor I owned that didn't have cast centers like both my M9's do now. On my M9's you have to physically demount the wheels and either flip them 180 degrees to align the rim lugs with the center section or mount the wheel in the alternate holes in the cast center section. Same applies to the fronts but changing the wheel offset just entails mounting on the opposite side of the welded on lugs on the front wheels.
Last tractor I owned had 'power adjust' rims was a cabbed ag., Massy that is long gone and was a PITA anyway. Not familiar with JD as I've never owned one other than a vintage 4020 diesel which is also long gone. Wheel spacing on that one was moving the entire assembly farther out on the extended axle shafts, something I never did anyway.
