12 hp Briggs & Stratton rebuild kits?

When the connecting rod broke on my BS 16 hp MTD (common problem I read) I order a Predator 23 hp VTwin. Bolted right up the original holes and so far with 105 hours no problems. Only problem is HF will not ship to a freight forwarder so getting it to Panama was a bit harder

Every part I ordered (in2021) for my Vanguard 16HP engine had B&S logo with made in China below it on the parts packaging. It seems most all parts come from China.

If anyone has it, Jack’s would.
Another vote for Jack's. I had to replace one the spindles on the mower deck of my rider mower, and the one I got from there was cheaper than an OEM replacement, and better quality.
Probably going to find you can buy a HF (made in China) engine complete cheaper than repair parts for your B&S....
I know it was cheaper to go with the HF 6.5 HP engine to replace the 5 hp B&S engine on my log splitter than buy needed parts to get B&S running...
And yes I hate sending my money to China but....
I went the same route when I needed to replace the engine on my log splitter. Absolutely no problems with it, all the mounting bolts lined right up with the 80s vintage B&S that was on it. I figured I might have to hunt down metric bolts to attach the hydraulic pump, but they were tapped for SAE, same thread as the original.
Initially I was going to try to repair the original, but our local small engine guy told me don't bother...the parts alone would cost more than a brand new HF one. The Predator starts easier, runs smoother, & quieter better on gas, more power...what's not to like?

I hear ya on China, but in this case it was a quality product at about 30% of the price of a new B&S.

I had a catastrophic failure with my EU7000is over a year ago. A replacement engine or short block is not available and as recent as a week ago they are still 1 to 2 years out for shipping. The little Champion 3100 is about worn out and I was interested in the new model EU3200is but still, no one stocks them yet. And, dang, $2895 or so. So this week I bought a Predator 4550 for $700 on a trip to town. If genset breaks I can replace it three more times and be at break even for the Honda.

Bottom line for me is that if foreign made parts or even a whole replacement engine availability is going to be a problem, the broken unit is still ending up with a junk yard contribution.

Hi, and welcome to TBN. Have you considered contacting B & S directly? They may sell to the end user or direct you to a place that does. You could also consider replacing the engine.
Thank you for getting back to me. I will give them a try.

Thanks to everyone for replying. I just sent off an email to Jack's. I've had this "old iron" since 1989 and hate to give up on it. It's been a great engine. I do know sometimes we have to bite the bullet and end up with Chinese parts/replacements when it comes to cost. I miss the "Made In USA" labels though. I'll keep you guys posted. Again, appreciate the help, Joe

Assume this is one of the vintage B&S 12s from the 80s/90s? If so consider adding a a replacement oil slinger to your search/shopping list. Whatever nylon/acetal//et al B&S used wasn't designed for a 30 year life span. They erode away to the point some become more oil frothers than slingers. Iron lined cylinders?
Good luck.
Thanks for that tip. I will do that if I can track down all the parts.

1989 isn't old to most of us, but you may see "NLA" on many parts lists. Used, may be an option. Having all the goofy/long ID numbers for B&S is important.
