12 miles on the road?

depends on the roads you are taking. if they have lots of traffic, driving may not be such a good idea. 12 miles is a long drive at 4 mph...about like walking, only much colder because you're not moving. unless there are issues that need dealer attention, I would do the 50 hr service myself. I did mine and it went smoothly. you will need a filter wrench.

I believe I'd do the service myself and use the $180 as a down payment on a good trailer, which around here can be had for less than $1000 new, and maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of that used. Heck, a couple or three trips to the dealer would pay for a good used trailer. Plus, the trailer will be handy many times in the future for lots of things - I use mine for gravel, dirt, sand, junk metal, scrap wood, tree cuttings, logs, taking my big Scag zero-turn in for service, etc. - but it will also always be there when you need it for the tractor, and trailering will be a lot safer than roading out there with those morons on the highway with cell phones stuck to their ears.

not that it matters, I live in Ct also, and in no way,, would I ever take the L 48 and run it 12 miles... THe tires wouldn't last too long, and even though there are only 650 - 700 living in this town,, the roads are too dangerous as they are used by many in surrounding towns to access I 84.. I trailer mine always.. Call around, maybe a local gas station or auto body shop has a roll back truck and will move this machine for a reasonable price.

My L3430 will go 19 mph at wide open throttle. I run about 16 -17 mph because the roads are too bumpy!

1*I would drive it.
2*I even cheated a little and didn't take engine cowling all the way off
3* not having a funnel with a hose on it.

1*Does his insurance cover that?
2*I've never removed it - What is the point in taking it off??
3* I've found those funnels practically useless - ever try to stand a wet noodle on end.
Much better is a funnel with a flex spout.

1: I don't have any idea.
2: The manual says to remove it to get better access to the oil filter.
3: Ya gotta tie it up to something. Never had a flex spout, probly oughta get one of them too.

Most tractor dealers sell a spout that will fit on a UDT/SUDT jug that has a hose and a siphon break built in. It isn't brand specific as most fluids come in the wide mouth 2.5 gallon jugs. I believe they are around $3.50

I don't know if this idea will help you any or not. I needed a third hand to hold the funnel to put hydraulic fluid in. What I did was make a funnel from PVC. I used a 4-2" bell and then 45* angles with short pieces of pipe. The pipe diameter was sized to fit snug into the transmission of the tractor and the last piece long enough to make the whole thing stable even when full of oil. It works great. Maybe something similar would work for you. See the attachment above.

I used a hose, funnel and a spring clamp. Clamped the funnel to the crossbar on the ROPS. When finished I took it all apart and can use it on something else.

( In NY they want you to have a plate (yes.. even farm vehicles are regulated in this state) if you are going to do any road travel. The DMV has a special form and they want you to specify where you plan to use public roadsl. I think that has more to do with putting up "farm vehicle" signs.. but I didn't get the plate.)

Jibber,

I live in NY about 30 miles from Rochester, and both the State Police and DMV told me I was perfectly fine.. no plate of any sort required. I've also encountered State Police and local Police while driving down the road, and none of them ever gave me a second glance. Now, admittedly, this is farm country.. and a tractor on the road is a common site, but I'm surprised we got such different responses to the same question. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Bob
