Color temperature makes a BIG difference in perceived "brightness". I bought some 60W equivalent LED bulbs for the overhead bedroom light since that's what I usually get in incandescent. BANG! It was like looking at the sun. Too bright for a bedroom.

I switched those out for 40W equivalent and it's good now. A color temperature of about 6,000K will appear bright-white while temps under 5,000K will appear on the yellow side like incandescent bulbs. You really can't just compare old wattage to new wattage equivalent when choosing LED bulbs. Compare Lumens and Color Temperature.
