13 year old tires, time to replace?

These were the condition of the tires on my 2004 L4630 when I bought it in 2014 and sold it in 2018.
Filled with rim guard and still no leaks. Sat in the Florida sun for most of its life

I’m still running an original set of Firestone’s on a 1970 International 140. They have “gum dipped” on the side of them. They are also loaded, more than likely with calcium.

The Ford 4630 we have, I just put a new set of Firestone's on it last year cause I ran a large stick through one of them. The ones that were on it, they were original from 1993 and had good tread, they were just getting thin and that was the third time I'd had a flat from running something through one.

My 2006 Kioti rear tyres are still in perfect condition. Only checked the pressures twice and no loss of air. No signs of cracks or perishing.
The front tyres however should never have been fitted to a tractor with a FEL as they were too soft when the FEL was used.
I replaced them with heavy duty tyres a few years ago and it has been great since.

My 1978 Ford 1100 got a different set of tires in 2012 because the new owner wanted them. I got the original tires and rims with it when i bought the tractor back.

If they ARE filled with CaCl, you might plan on new rims and new tires when you replace.

If the tires are tubed and don’t leak the rims will last indefinitely. That’s the part people can’t grasp. Rim rot is a maintenance problem, not a calcium chloride problem.

I ran an old Massey with R1s for 10 years with lugs missing and cord showing before one blew. My JD4310 had bald fronts and cracks all the way around on one of the rears so I replaced all four. Don't know if or how long they might have run but they were already 14 years old.

Well, shoot. Y'all are giving me a renewed hope that I may not need to get new fronts...... Just yet? I guess I should upload a picture of the sidewall cracking and get a concensus huh?

I got new front tires for my kubota when they wouldn't hold air anymore and couldn't be repaired. I don't know how many years that was, but I'm sure it was more than 13. I had 25 years on my rear tires before I had to replace them. If the tire is more of a hassle to air it up and repair it than I want to put up with, then I will replace it. I have a front tire on my JD that is 10 years old, I ran over a thorn several years ago and have had air leaks in it ever since in spite of several attempts to fix it. I'm considering replacing it even thou it is in good shape.

My ‘64 MF35 Utility has the original Firestone tires all around on it. The rears were calcium filled. Most leaked out and ruined the wheel loops. Just replaced one of them, I’ll do the other this spring.

They’re dry cracked all over. I just use it around my property so not a big deal if I get a flat. I’ll just block it up in place and replace the loop.

Heh, my fronts are supposed to be tri-ribs, they’re as smooth as bologna skins!

Sitting in the seat of your tractor imagine that heavy load over your head whwn a front tire gives out.

thats my way of thinking. If I havnt given all the possible situations they will be in I wouldnt be fair to myself or my family. We dont have much flat land on the mountain side.
The fronts are replaced with the highest ply rateing possible and new enough to be trusted. The rears not so much. Cant imagine a flat or worse being a problem. They are also liquid filled. They will be replaced when eminent failure may become a concern.
I couldnt imagine how I would feel if my wife or son rolled the tractor and I didnt do everything I could to keep it from mechanically failing.
As a 30+ year mechanic I have seen lots of overly worn front tires on customer cars and its a bit scarey knowing lots of those people are driving towards you on the highways.

Just my 2 cents....

With a good many years of tractor operation behind me I can only recall one instant tire rupture and that was actually a rim that rusted out and separated under load.
Usually they have leaked down, some slowly some faster but never with a tire shredding blowout as can happen on the highway.
Even when the tube starts showing through the sidewall cracks and then blows it doesn't shred the tire it just goes flat,
I can't recall ever hearing or seeing a tractor roll over from a tire failure.

Neighbor had one this past summer. Moving large round bales with a large MF tractor, not sure of the model. Sounded like a canon shot going off. He was in a sloped area above a small but deep pond. He didn't roll it, but only by pure luck. I think it was the tire on the high side of the slope and that's probably what saved it from going over.

Another thing to consider is tires are date coded. If you have a accident tire related you may not be insured.
State patrol (on road) and insurance investigators will check. If the tires are old and breaking down and caused the accident the liability will be on the owner.

Who decides how old is too old???

Manufactures and insurance companys.
For motor vehicles in Washington state 8 years. Most tire shops wont touch a 8 year old tire for repairs. Replace only. Same with wear marks. Tire wear is a major factor checked in crashes.
Industrial.. I dont know. I would imagine ageing or wear would be a major factor. Maybe some of you farm insurance guys could stand in here.
You can bet insurance companies will look for reasons to bale.

Never, ever heard a peep about tractor tire age and liability in the same sentence. I think you are fear mongering.

I just did the calculation, 86.5 % of AG tires are over 8 years old,,,
