Here is a photo update of our little shed project. We are still waiting on some tin but we have got much of it on and even the rear vent was mounted today. I added photos of the shelving because it lines the door opening and they are structural. They go to the 1st side wall studs so if the door is ever pulled on, the wall will be pulled as well. The shelving is screwed down at all edges and is glued, plus is made from 3/4 plywood. The door wall is the weakest because, no shock, has a lareg door in it. So the shelves serve as its reinforcement.

At the end of a long day, we decided to tow an implement in. Please note, we should have used a strap winch mounted to floor to tow in, but its not setup yet.

The light panels were installed to one side today and we thought they looked rather nice. Winch support was upgraded with a strip of 3/4 plywood that's 4ft long. Any comments?

Nice Arly. Pardon me if I missed it but what is the material of your 'light' panels?

Our metal and light panels came from MS (Metal sales) and I was just to their web site and could not locate any translucent panels (right name?) offered there. Nonetheless, when we built a similar building a few years ago, the light panels were polycarbonate were as these smelled and look like there fiberglass. So it seems they've changed them over the past few years.

You know, a true gambrel design has no side wall when it's part of an upper floor, or shorter knee side walls when it's single story, so I don't think there is any gain in space, in fact it's a loss. It's really just a slick way to combine roof and wall into one. Came about on English buildings for the top floor (attic for us).

If you put a gambrel style roof on top of full size side walls on a single story building, then you gain a lot more volume up top, but not quite like adding a second story, so it's kind of an in-between. If you can keep the trusses open, it's some good usable space. If not, I think it's just styling.

Well I don't know what you want to call it but the pic is what I was writing about.

Due to zoning laws a second story is banned, but a gambrel w/ a loft passes.

The door was installed yesterday. Of course it was to heavy for us to lift so we decided to attached two ropes to sling under it. To do this, two pulleys were mounted to the 2nd rafter which the ropes were threaded through and the door raised into position. Photos will show this better than my lame description.

Looking GREAT.

Have you calculated the approximate dead weight of the entire structure?
From above the worms to the bird poop on the shingles?

I love the creative way of doing this. It's a revised old school design in some ways. But I had to look up those ties you used, and holy moly they cost you more than many guys have in an entire shed! That sucker must be stout.

Guys, No idea what it weights but its quite a bit. It would certainly be lighter if it sat on a foundation. I hope to not be involved if it ever gets moved. ;-) Cost is in the $9000 area. Most people cut corners and costs and lose strength on their skid sheds which is fine, until they try moving it. Please note, this building has a high snow load capacity which is code here.. All this adds to our cost. Oh and the Simpson corner brackets cost us around $1500.

More silly photos. This is a lift bracket I built yesterday so as to lower the lifting point on this implement. Its held on with two 3/8th U bolts.
