Tow rating on the new mid size truck is set to be around 6700lbs. Pretty good #'s. Not sure if this will increase w the diesel option set for next year's production.

This would be the perfect truck for me for everything I need, minus towing the tractor. I'd love to get into either a Canyon or one of the 1/2ton's, but it just won't tow the tractor and equipment. It really stinks though because I tow that stuff so rarely that it's almost a waste to get a big truck for the one or two times I tow it every 4 months or so.

I suppose I could continue using my father's 1ton and go for one of the new Canyon's with a diesel, I'd love that truck.

The Titan will get a V8 5.0l Cummins diesel. Sure 500lb-ft of torque will be fun but in a 1/2 ton with a soft typical Nissan off-road suspension, it will be useless for heavy towing and return the same or less fuel mileage as the big V8's with more expensive fuel and maintenance plus a $3000 premium.

RAM is doing it right with a small diesel that will match the top performers in power (420 lb-ft) yet return more than enough fuel mileage savings to offset the higer priced fuel and maintenance. Many reports are averaging 25-28 mpg in mixed driving. That's around 10 mpg more than any other full size truck out there!

The Jeeps with the same engine are getting better than their EPA ratings as well.

I REALLY like the looks of this new mid-sized the GMC. With the small diesel next year, it will be a perfect sized truck for many with light towing needs and return 35+ mpg.

Not sure where you're get your Nissan Titan info but my 08 has the toughest suspension of an 1/2 ton I have owned, about 12. It rides as bad as my 06 F350 diesel.

As for towing it pulls my 9,680# boat 3000 miles or so a year turning in 9.1mpg.

that's a whole lot of weight for a Titan isn't it Chris? Hope that weight includes trailer++++
Most of the guys I know towing five tons are using a diesel 3/4 ton. Or maybe now a diesel half ton but
something with some grunt down low. That used to take a big block for gas, now the future seems to be turbos, or two.
With regular gas selling for half a buck a gallon less than diesel, I don't drive anywhere enough miles to make a diesel pay for itself, but
if you need the power, where else to go? I like the V10Ford in my motorhome, but I have to turn my brain off when refueling. Don't want to do that with my truck.

I figure over five tons, all bets are off, you need a bigger truck. Or you are just living on the edge of your allowable load and boy your tires had better be spot on, your brakes in top condition, etc. Some people like to keep the load under 90% of capacity, others I'm sure run 20% over with no harm. Hate to be in an accident with an overloaded truck though. Sort of puts a bullseye on your back.

Five tons is not this new Colorado's market. Most of them will be pulling 2000-5000 pound trailers. Will be interesting to see how they spec the diesel towing capacity.
Will also be interesting to find out how heavy duty the towing package is, as in how many coolers on the engine, Bilstein shocks?
My Chevy Suburban 2500 came with such terrible oem shocks it amazed me how much better a replacement set of Bilsteins were. And not that expensive either.
How about a nice shock option without having to go full bore offroad package?

Forgot about the factory option trailer brake control. Thanks for mentioning it. Built a Tuxedo Black pilot GMC Canyon crew cab 4wd today. It looked very attractive. The body lines look good. Happy as a whole with all the progress being made. Can't wait to build units for dealer inventory. I'm ready to see them on the showroom floor.

It comes from my brother and camping buddy who has an 08 Titan and matching 32ft travel trailer and squats a good 1-1/2" more than my older 1500. It has a great off-road package and I love the lockers but feels like a boat on the highway, too soft.
As for towing it pulls my 9,680# boat 3000 miles or so a year turning in 9.1mpg.
Ha!
Let me guess, your that guy who tows an aerodynamic, no tongue weight 10k lb boat and brags to everyone how you passed a Ford/RAM/GM truck pulling a 7k lb camper or enclosed trailer thinking your truck is the best but don't understand the difference aerodynamic drag can cause. Right?
9.6 mpg sounds about right. You'd get 10-11mpg towing that boat using anyone elses V8 and making more than 317hp.

I can tell you from personal experience a 25ft 10k lb boat is NOTHING compared to a 32ft 7k lb travel trailer once your up to highway speed. Even my 6k lb tractor/backhoe on a 2,500lb equipment trailer feels HALF as heavy as my 32ft 7k lb travel trailer on the highway.

Ever towed something other than a boat with that Titan?

Anyways, enough sidetracking...
I would assume the tow rating of the new mid-sized GM's goes DOWN a little with a heavier engine but if they learned from Ford's mistake they will offer a higer GVWR/GCWR package only for the diesel model to push sales and a higher payload/tow capacity.

I know what you mean. A pontoon boat catches much more air than a ski boat at speed.

I have a 2006 f350 4x4 diesel. It does not leave the garage unless it's 10,000# or more.

My Titan handles that boat and it's tongue weight fine. It's pulled that boat alone 35,000 miles and other trailers for more than another 30,000 miles. Truck has almost 90,000 miles now and has had a battery, set of brakes, set of tires, all fluids changed at 60,000 and the only unscheduled item has been a $3 license plate bulb.

Most trouble free cheapest to own vehicle I have had. It's vehicle # 24 for me. I have # 25 sitting in the garage right next to it.

I tow for a living. I have towed just about everything you can imagine with it. By the way the boat is 13'6" tall on the trailer. I am on vehicle #25, the Titan is #24. I have had them all. Mostly Fords but GM, Dodge, and Toyota also in trucks. I transport my tractor that weighs 5,600# without the trailer, campers, lots of boats, equipment, you name it to the tune of about 10,000 miles per year since 1995. I have plenty of miles to know what works and don't. I also have a 2006 F350 4x4 diesel but it will not roll unless it's over 10,000# Chris

Boy you sure do repeat the same stories alot don't ya?
The F350 doesn't leave without 10k lbs right? Ha ha!

Also, you haven't hauled a large travel trailer with it right?
