RD, I couldn't tell you for sure weather a tree shear would cut dry oak or not. I think a fellow could rent one for a day or so and try it without spending a fortune. They are pretty common at most rental yards. The link above shows a shear similar to the one I used. As you can see, the shear grabs the tree so that it can't fall. You can place the tree where you want it. In your case, you could clip the top as far up as you can reach (10' or so) and place that in the trash pile, then clip the trunk and place it in the firewood stack. I would think that a 10' straight log would appeal to a firewood processor.
