1500D - front wheel

Hi everyone. The other day I was turning sharply right in some mud and the left front wheel was twisted off because the tractor 'pushed over it' and literally pulled the four bolts out of their threads. In the process the rim was deformed. I noticed there were no locking nuts on either front wheel. Is that normal or did my predecessor (a neighbor from whom I bought it) not use the right bolts (which are long enough for locking nuts) and nuts? I have ordered the repair manual to check, but wonder what you think about this. Thank you much.

It sure sounds like the lug nuts were not tight, allowing them to back out until they either stripped the theads or broke. Hopefully they broke, but I doubt it. You can blame it on your neighbor, but it's your tractor and you need to maintain it. Yes, there should have been lock washer on the bolts. The bolts should be long enough to be flush with the back side of the hub. If they are too long, grit will build up on the threads and damage them when the bolts are removed. Too short, well you know...

Thanks Cord. I am not blaming my neighbor for it. He kept it up very well. I simply meant to say that I have not had the wheels off yet and that I assumed his configuration was correct. And yes, when the bolts came off they took the thread with them. I was surprised how easily this happened.

I recommend replacing the bolts with some hardened ones, drilling the hub and installing some heli-coils into the holes. Good as new.
