No ROPS? "Providentially hindered" by the breaking of your lift arm is the term that comes to my mind followed by "Praise God."

AMEN! 1 Thessalonians 5:18 "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you".

I can not begin to recount all the times in my life that something unexpected and (at the time) disappointing happened and was revealed to me at a later time...in some cases years later, that it was Gods hand protecting me from myself.

:DTo saftey police:eek:

Thanks guys for your concern. I do appreciate it and will certainly try to live a long and healthy life.

Plus I was backing up in a tight place and I think that put the extra strain on everything.

While I agree with you that I should get a ROPS (It is in the planning stages and has not yet been actualized along with a subframe.), I can defend myself somewhat by noting as I wrote above that I was backing up when the arm broke--You cannot flip over backwards when you are traveling backwards. Additionally, when I carry a load on the 3 point, say in my scoop like last Saturday, and lift more than is counterbalanced by the weights on the front bumper the front wheels come off the ground, however, the front stops going up when the scoop hits the ground and this occurs at a relatively low angle. In the case in question, there never was a danger of overturning. I was in a tight situation between trees and trying to maneuver with a load on the 3pt. This caused extra stress on the lift, perhaps a little sideways, since I was trying to turn.

I really do not mean to be cynical, and I know that you are right in that I really should have a ROPS, but I do not yet.

In light of that, here is a situation that I faced and have been thinking about recently. I was working along a creek bank picking up the fallen branches and such and a couple of places are kind of "scary". The trail slopes sharply to the creek side and there is deep water below. The question, if you were to slip off the trail and overturn into the water, would you be better off with ROPS and seatbelt or ROPS but not belted, or some other option? I know, better to avoid such situations or make the trail better, but the latter is not allowed and the former will not be heeded. What do you think?

IMHO ROPS and NO belt. i dropped mine on its side a few weeks ago,i managed to scramble off it and get clear before it went over onto its side but if i was belted in i could not have done this. i was off the machine, had it switched off in seconds, had the tow chain out,4WD in position and pulled it back onto its wheels in under 5 minutes. being belted in i think i would have sustained some sort of injury but maybe not-cant say for sure. if i had no ROPS for sure it would have been a lot worse.

That's a good question and one I have pondered myself because I have similar places that I go w/ my tractor. I tend to believe that in the majority of situations though, a ROPS trumps no ROPS. I really wasn't trying to point fingers here, just come watch me work around my place for a day. Chances are, if you brought a camcorder you could make one of those Youtube videos of someone (me) doing something really stupid. I have owned far more tractors w/out ROPS than with. I do have ROPS on my Mitsubishi now but went for 3-4 yrs with none. When I say God has protected me from myself, I am not projecting that on anyone else.....I can pull some real boners and need all the help I can get. I'm just with 2manyrocks on the this....you weren't hurt, probably wouldn't have been but isn't God good! Hey, you've got an extra lift arm now that you may need during a crucial time later....who knows? :D

You made me :Dchuckle:D to myself as I read this. I am very confident that God protects me from me all the time.

The other day I was doing something and started thinking if the guys from TBN saw this I would get a loud lecture! It did not keep me from doing it, but I was pretty careful about it. I was gathering leaves and putting them in small trailer that I pulled with the tractor. It was necessary to go from pile to pile and load them in the trailer. I would just put the power shift into 1 and walk beside the tractor and steer it to the next pile. Love that powershift! Boy to I understand what you are saying--heh, if the shoe fits wear it! Right?

With this post I have reached the milestone of 1000 posts!! Thank you all for your patience and friendship.

Yeah Guys
Know what you mean. I had an accident at the early part of this year that just about did me in.Over 6wks.ICU and a few more as a patient Still can't remember exactly what happend.I have came to the conclusion that it's God telling me You don't want to know what happend or you don't need to know what you've done this time and that he was watching over me.:D

MJ,

I can relate to the putting the tractor in gear, while off if it. When I load it on my trailer, to tighten the front tiedown chain i put in in creep and then reverse and let it walk back till tight. Even though it is a relatively safe process due to the speed involved, it has made me think I could do it other times which is the really dumb part. And although I havnt gotten to the point of thinking about this forum when my urge for stupidity strikes, I sure got a chuckle out of that tid-bit from you! Its funny how we would do those things but if someone else were doing it we would strongly advise against it.

You say you can't improve the trail and you can't avoid the situation, but you've been thinking about the situation. I don't have a good answer, but maybe with some more information or pictures, someone might have some useful ideas to consider.

One of the great things about TBN is being able to learn things from other people and there's nowhere else like it. Lots of times when I have no answer or the wrong answer, fortunately someone else has a good one.
