1533 ?\'S

I am thinking of trading my 500 hr. MF 1220 with FEL and 60 in. finish mower in for a MF 1533 with FEL, 5ft. tiller, and 72 in. finish mower. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 8x8 syncroshuttle tranny and the 12x12 powershuttle tranny besides 4 more speeds? Would the 12x12 be better for tiller work? Any idea of the cost difference? thanks... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: 1533 ?\'S

The 12 speed is better for tilling because you have lower gears. The other difference is that with a PowerShuttle you don't have to clutch to change directions. If it isn't loaded real heavy, you can also take off from a dead stop without using the clutch. A PowerShuttle has a fluid clutch instead of a dry clutch. A fluid clutch will last many, many, many times longer than a dry clutch.

Hey Jerry, is that fluid clutch a torque converter? as was/is used on heavier const equip? The clutch pedal was seldom even used. The shuttle lever on the steering column, when in the neutral position, was a complete disconnect and allowed gear changes. Also the tractor would be slowed down under full load as the torque converter slipped. Just was wondering if the MF Power Shuttle works the same way.

Re: 1533 ?\'S

The fluid clutch in a powershuttle is more like a clutch pack in a automatic transmission. It consists of several clutch discs and plates that are submerged in hydraulic fluid. When the shuttle lever is moved a solenoid is activated that controls a servo for the clutches.

Thanks Jerry, now I know how that power shuttle works. I wonder if any other brand of CUT uses a torque converter.

Back to the original post. If I had a choice on a new tractor I think I'd too get the 12x12. I currently have a syncro-shuttle 16x16 and find myself using the creeper gears quite often, so there is some merit in having more gear selection than the 8x8. You're gonna like that 1533 either way.

They don't have a torque converter. Just a syncro shift shuttle shift transmission with a hydraulic clutch.

So is the wet clutch setup in the 12x12 more durable/better? When the wet clutch goes bad is it more difficult and expensive to replace than a standard dry clutch? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: 1533 ?\'S

What about the push button PTO engagment on the 1533? Will it be prone to failure (electronics)? My 1220 has a manaul lever type PTO engagment. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 1533 ?\'S

It is both more durable and better. It should last as long as your tractor or longer. In the life of the tractor a wet clutch is actually less expensive. It would cost more to replace than a dry clutch, but I can't see it ever needing replace.

Re: 1533 ?\'S

The PTO on the larger 1200s, 1400s and 1500s are also a fluid clutch. The only problem that I have seen or heard of is once or twice a switch needing to be replaced. That is the dash switch and it can be changed in about 10 minutes even if you have never done it before.
