17.5hp brigs vanguard question

is the 17.5hp brigs vanguard a single cylinder? i didn't know they made single cylinder engines that big. i always thought anything bigger than 9 or 10 horse was a twin cylinder.

is there an advantage to a single cylinder over a v twin other than being cheaper to manufacture (which the savings would never be passed on to the customer anyway)

I don't know, I have the 18hp Vanguard twin in my JD GT235.

Don't know what you have but the smallest JD 105 series riding mower is listed on their site with a 19 hp Briggs with one cylinder.

it's out of a year 2000 sabre model 1742. it just says vanguard. it doesn't say anything about being a v twin. it doesn't even look like a vtwin. i'm just supprised that it isn't. i didn't know they made riding mower engines that big in a single cylinder.

Briggs has been making the larger single cylinder engines all my life that I know of, don't know where you have been.

Seriously I would be careful not to spend too much on an old Sabre mower with transaxle problems. If you can fix it cheaply maybe but if not it may be time to upgrade. As far as the single cylinder engine it is not as desirable as a twin but if you can cut the grass that is the end result you are looking for.
