I think it's absolutely wonderful that you have your son helping you. I remember as a kid the many days I would help my dad with various projects. He's gone now but the memories will last a life time. Also I love the oak trim you have in your home, beautiful!

SRS, I have a lot of the same memories from when I was growing up, and the various skills that I learned during that time have definitely been invaluable (although I have fine-tuned them significantly over the years).

We are really happy with the oak trim, in fact, my wife wants me to start putting up oak crown moulding in the room we just painted. Also, I had not put it back on the walls before i snapped the pics I posted, but I have 8" oak baseboard trim that really adds to the look.

just got the roof on mine the end of october, started it on 9-11-10.i still have siding to do and other finish work.i wish i went with rafters but i made 2x6 trusses.definitley a learning experience,i started it too late and was rushed to finish before the weather got to cold.

Have you posted any pics? Everyone on here definitely likes to look at pics!!

I'm hoping to get started on my rafters this weekend, but I'm not sure the weather is going to cooperate. I don't mind working in the snow, but the wind is really bad at my place, and that is sometimes just a little too much to deal with!! :(

I just picked up my board & Batten siding Monday from my local Amish lumber mill, so I'm anxious to get everything done... I've got two stacks of hemlock lumber waiting for me to get at, so along with my 13 year old son, I told my 19 year old son not to make any plans for this Saturday (snow or not)!!!

I plan on building machine shed in the spring. I havent decided weither I want metal siding or batten board! Did you price out both? My planned shed looks to be in the size of 20x48x10, although I want 16ft opens. I think I am going with trusses too!

My question is is batten boards cheeper than steel?

here are some pictures.i ended up cutting out the middle post and put in a new post for a 16ft door.i used osb for the sides and roof 24in on center for the trusses. the wife wants vinyl siding to match the house.metal would have been much easier.oh well keep the little women happy.and for anyone who wants to use trusses 24ft wide built with 2x6 is the most one person can handle and they hurt like heck if they slip don' ask.

Looks good!! I was lucky and my wife wasn't concerned about what I sided it with, as long as it doesn't look like Crap!! Not too much pressure... I haven't decided if I'm going to stain the hemlock with a natural color stain, or stain it white to match the house?? Either way, I plan to trim it out in green to match the steel roof.

Sounds like the truss incident was a little painful...lol

The cost of B&B versus Steel is primarily dependent upon where you live and what kind of access you have to a lumber mill. I found a local Amish lumber mill here in Western PA that put the cost of B&B well below that of steel. In fact, for my 18x24 pole building, i will have less than $1,500.00 in material. I personally like the looks of B&B better than steel, so i would have selected the B&B even if the prices were equal.

For the size of building mine is, i just couldn't justify paying $500 for trusses when I could do it the old fashioned way for less than $50 in lumber...

Good luck!

I take all your lumber is rough cut or just the B&B? I am pretty sure I can get trusses for around 25ea. and put on four foot centers. where your rafters rough cut too? how big are they?

Everything except for my posts are rough cut, although with the band saws they use now, it's not very rough. ;) Also, this guy cuts all of his framing lumber 1 1/2" thick so that it can be matched up with your standard store bought lumber (nice feature). My rafters are 2x8's (true 8" width) and will be set on 4' centers with 2x4 purlins.

Another weekend goes by without anything accomplished...ugh! We got a couple inches of snow and it didn't get above 22 degrees all weekend! Along with a constant wind, that's just too cold to work outside. Now i hear we are supposed to be getting an additional 4 or so inches this week. At least I have been able to get the 2305 out and move some snow around this winter!!

Well, believe it or not, we have had about 2 or 3 days of nice weather since my last post in January! Anyone who lives in western PA can attest to the horrible winter and start to spring we have had.

Anyway, my youngest boy and I have been able to get some work done the last couple of weeks ( in between the rain storms)... We just got three of the seven rafters/trusses up today, so I'm happy about that!

More to come!!
