19.5 hp briggs and stratton

Well, today a guy brought in a craftsman riding mower with a 19.5 hp briggs on it. He siad the probelem was that it wouldent turn over when he turned the key. Today i spend 6 hours tracing every inch of wiring an stripping down the traxtor to the frame. still no luck If i take the battery charger set on150 amos and touch the startor post it will turn over but no other way. ive checked all the saftey swiches too could it be the sylinoid? thanks

If it took 150 amps at the starter to get it to crank I'd be looking at a starter or the decompresser. I presume you did the normal tests of pulling the plugs to see if it would crank, and checking the valve adjustment? Not sure which starter you have but IIRC correctly it is should take around 20 to crank it at the starter post. If it's really drawing the amperage you say I imagine the solenoid was damaged just from trying to pull excess current.

I have that same mower and had the same issue recently. It turned out to be a bad safety seat switch.

Valve gap adjustment is absolutely critical with my single cylinder B&S OHV 19 hp engine. If the gap is wrong it simply can't get past the compression stroke. It drove me nuts until I read about the fix on this forum. Before that I had tried everything including removing and tearing down the starter. But with the correct gap it starts easily, revs higher, and idles much lower without conking out. I adjust mine by guesswork to a near zero gap. They are easily adjusted but can be a little puzzling at first sight. (It has a small, hard to see, allan key head inside the locknut.)

ok, now my other question is that if the quick connect is disconnected for lets say tue saftey switch, does tue tractor short out or in other words not let it crank over?
