1949 8N Won't Start

My,my,aren't we peevish today? I'm sure pmsmechanic has seen a fair number of Ns but simply misstated what he was thinkin. There's enough inaccuracy in this situation to go around but there's better ways of pointing them out. I wager every single person that read the below comment by Tractorable know's there's other reasons for gas dripping from air intake (most common is overly choking while trying to start) but not a one hurled a barb at Tractorable over it. If you must rebuke someone, advise Batman he shouldn't start multiple threads about this same problem.

Yo jax...you throwin a barb at me?....:)

I going home now to see if my new carb fixes N.

For the most part I'm an easy going guy. I'm not offended and I don't mind learning something new. Sometimes late at night when I'm tired I could be more careful what I say because I get short. As long as I learn something here i'm good.

Not at all. If that were my objective,I would have advised you to ask pmsmechaic for advice about pms. I spect the feller (or gal) is a medical professional specializing in help with an age old problem. Seriously,Soundguy,we can all learn from one another, lets not only show how old tractors can be fixed, let's demonstrate how it can be done in a friendly atmosphere. As I figure many others do, 90% of the time I come here for relaxation and intertainment. In the spirit of practicing what I preach, here's good advice for OP. When you open more than one thread on the same subject on the same forum it's equivilant to having too many cooks in the kitchen at once.

This is funny! My last name is Peters. PMS stands for Peters Mechanical Services. I also use the acronym for Poor Me Syndrome at times too. My neighbour had the best reaction to the name ever. "Does this mean you only have one bad week a month?"

Peevish?

You fix it.

About the possible coil being the problem: many time a coil will heat up as the tractor is running if the coil is defective. Next time time you have the engine running and it dies, immediately put your hand on the body of the coil. If the coil is pretty warm or hot, that is a strong indication you have a defective coil. A bad condenser could still also be bad, but in my opinion, with that little test it is condenser or the coil. A bad condenser can also burn out or cause the coil to "open up" internally and cause engine to die. A still stand by my suspicion of bad condenser, bad coil, or both.

All these conditions are TESTABLE, but guessing is easier I suppose .

Checking the coil, mounted to the engine for a fever? Too funny!

Good luck to the OP.

I didn't get back from Boise in time to work on it yesterday, and today it's raining, so hopefully I can work on it tomorrow.

For those of you concerned about me having threads on two forums, consider this; I started the thread on this forum first, then realized the other forum may have been the better place to ask for help. Either way, why does it concern you? When you ask for advice on an issue, no matter how many forums you ask on, you are going to get more than one response. More often than not, you are going to receive conflicting solutions, and some of those giving advice may even get hurt feelings when someone mocks their solution, knowledge, or lack of knowledge. My only objective here and on the other thread is to get the advice that is going to get my tractor running and be reliable.

"Its" the carburetor.
As Soundguy said, the ignition is testable and only requires a simple static set-up.
I have had my 9N with the front dist for 30 years and my 8N for about 12.
If one of them won't start, (which is rare) it is almost always a flooding problem from setting around in the off season.
It takes about 15 minutes to easily fix. (Read post 25)
It isn't rocket science.
Troubleshooting and repairing an N is about as easy as it gets.
Don't over complicate things.

"Its" the carburetor.
