1949 Farmall Cub Implements

I am getting a cub with a cultivator to cultivate my small corn field. A bit overkill, but quite a neat rig.

It does not have a standard hitch. I don't even know what it is called. Does anyone else know? And what could I attach to this thing?

I believe those were called a fast hitch or something like that.. only 1 connecting point right? Check, but I believe the pto goes reverse of what 'nromal ' ones do.. and at a higher rate. I could be thinking about another tractor type, but If I'm wrong, someone will chime in and correct/update us.

Is there a rod that comes back from a rockshaft in the middle of the tractor on the LH side? I don't think they had a fast-hitch available in 1949. I am fairly certain that one set of cultivators is mounted in the middle and is lifted/lowered by the RH rockshaft. If you are sitting in the seat and look on the LH side, there should be a single flat steel bar that moves with the hydraulic lever. Similarly, on the RH side, there is a "v"-shaped bar that moves. These are your rockshafts. There may be a big spring near the LH one. Make sure when you mount the cultivators, that you attach to the "backslash of the V" on the RH side. Otherwise, you will pick up the rears and lower the mids.
Also, not all Cubs from this time period came with standard hydraulics. Some were "spring lifts". Good luck.

Rob, the Farmall hitch is called the quickhitch. It is difficult to find implements to fit them. You can buy a kit to convert it to a threepoint hitch. Check out yesterdaystractors.com. There is a Farmall forum that would be a big help to you.

Right. You can buy an adapter from Valu-Bilt. However, if your cultivators are OEM, then they aren't 3PH anyway. Here is another question: Were the cultivators mounted recently, or were they just sitting around out back or in the shed etc. Hopefully, you have all of the parts. My oldest brother got a 140 (looks like a Cub but bigger) that came with a bunch of attachments. The disk plow was missing alot of mounting hardware and is therefore useless. Fortunately, it also had a rollover plow which he uses frequently.

Rob - I've attached a pic of my fleet. The '49 has the standard drawbar and the '66 has the fast hitch.

The standard drawbar is used to attach most of the implements for the Cub. Plows, harrows(disk, spike tooth, etc), and alot of others. It can be mounted facing forward and backward depending on the implement. It then will pivot up and down either manually or with hydraulics depending on the tractor. A few other parts are required though.

The fast hitch uses a single point "prong" which slides into a receiver. It came about in the mid-50's. Just back up to the implement and it clicks into place......off you go. There was also a 2 point fast hitch for the larger tractors.

Thanks for the history lesson. We had a '49 Cub in the 60's and for the life of me, I couldn't remember it having a fast hitch, although I have also worked with other 1 and 2 stinger fast hitches since.

Rich - When I first bought my '66, I thought it was going to be difficult to find implements for the fasthitch. I've found that to be not true. A little patience and turning over some rocks have yielded everything I've needed and then some. It came with a plow, disk harrow and front blade. I've since added a landscape rake, rear grader blade, platform carrier and, even though not for the hitch, the IH 1000 one arm loader.

There are plenty of drawbar and fasthitch implements out there. IH made 300,000+/- Cubs between '47 and '79. Not sure how that compares to Ford 2N, 8N, and 9N production or other tractors but I'm guessing the Cub is one of the highest production tractors ever made........i.e. plenty of implements. C

Chuck, I'm glad that you manage to find implements for the Farmalls. My wife really wants a Farmall Cub, but we rarely see implements, so we haven't seriously considered getting one yet. If we can find implements, then we won't have to bother doing a three point hitch conversion, and we might start looking more seriously!/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Rich - I looked at the 3-point conversion, too. $500 +/- to get it done. I did my homework/research and found that money would easily get me a couple implements for the existing set-up. Patience, patience.......did I say patience is the key to finding this stuff. You can't go to your Case/IH dealer to get the tractor or implements but it is amazing how many parts are available for both at the dealer and other places. Once you find the tractor/implement maintaining them is the easy part.

My father bought his Cub brand new in 1946. It had cultivators, plows, harrows, and a cool grader blade that fits on the fron like a snowplow, or in the middle like a grader. No telling how many hours are on the old girl, but she's still goin'.
I see implements for Cubs all of the time. If you keep your eyes open, you won't have any trouble finding just about anything.

Thanks for all the posts. I cultivated my corn this weekend. IH called it "cultivision" you look below and you can see if you are on target. I only have front cults on. It is perfect for the small farm/garden. Still using the JD 755 for tilling, mowing, etc.

For $2-$3K you can get one in perfect restored condition and everyone goes nuts when they see this thing. If it ever dies it becomes lawn art. But they seem to last forever.

As suggested I got the catalog of all of the implements. There were many. the planters are midmount and look very complicated to attach. How difficult is it to hook up the various implements for this tractor?

It takes me 20 minutes to hook up a four foot tiller to the 3PH and PTO of my JF 755.

I am all thumbs.

I guess my statement wasn't very clear. Planters for drawbar tractors were typically midmount and some planters for fast hitch tractors were rear mount. You can still get new rear mount planters from Powell for the fast hitch. C

My Cub only has the drawbar and not the fasthitch. How difficult is it to hook up midmount implements especially if they use the hydraulics or PTO?

I see implements, and tractors on the internet all the time. Unfortunately, they are usually in the mid-west and east. I got my "A" 'cause I was unable to find a Cub out here at the time.

There are always Cub's and implements out on Ebay. Just do a search on "Farmall".
