1968 JD 4020 loader question

If i am not mistaken, wasn't the 1010 the model before the 4020? The loader works fine, just looked like it was modified to fit the tractor. You talked about open and closed center valves, which is better? I have begun the restoration of this tractor and was a little stumped by the loader.

No. The 1010 was much smaller, the model before the 4020 was the 4010. The 1010 was less than 40 hp, the 4010-20 were up around 90 hp. The would expalin why the loader towers are so far forward on your tractor. To me it looks like they should be back closer to the operator. The only time I have seen that is when someone put a small loader on a larger tractor. That loader may look beefy due to it might have been for a 1010 industrial with a solid front axle. That would give it a greater capacity than a ag axle.

Would it be a good idea to abandon this loader and go with a 512 or better? It works fine, just looks a little weird.

If you are happy with it and the way it works why change it?

I have a friend with a 4020 with a loader from a smaller tractor. It seems to work fine for him. As long as you can lower the bucket at least so it is flat on the ground and the capacity isn't greater than the front axle will take. I wouldn't change it.

As a poster already stated the 1010 is a below 40 pto hp tractor and the 4020 was 94 pto hp.. Operating an open center hyd valve on a closed center system will rob main pump of output and severely heat the hyd oil/system which eventually shorten the life of the hyd system.

I see. Well, I use this tractor very sparingly, so I may be ok. That explains the hot hydraulic line by the loader control. I thought it was getting a little too warm.

A 4020 is a closed center system as mentioned above, I would make sure that the loader valve is for a closed system. This could be changed while keeping the loader itself, I do not think I would spend the money to get a new loader.. fix what you have to work properly. My experience with 4020's and loaders is that the front axle is not as strong as the modern tractors which limits its capabilities. I can say that my smaller 110tlb does a better job with dirt and gravel work than my 4020 ever did. The 4020 was and is a great tractor in most other uses, sometimes wish I had one again.

I will check on the loader operating valve. it is a two handle valve with 4 hoses. I move a little dirt and debris every now and then, mainly use the tractor for pulling a box blade, logs and discs. It pulls like beast. Now the 5020, by far the strongest tractor naturally aspirated I have ever operated.

I have seen full axle kits for a 4020.

Only upgrade I know of is putting a frt end from a 30 series such as a 4230/4430 under a 4020.
