John Deere 2030
Hi! I have just taken ownership of a 1973 Deere 2030 and I have a few questions Ive been unable to answer.

1. Ignition positions. There is 1 click to the left and 4 clicks to the right. No problems operating with lights on/off, just curious what all the positions are for and do.

2. PTO - I know its a live PTO, but are there any controls like gearing for it? My last tractor had this and other tractors I have used do as well. ? I had read that the yellow knobbed lever in between the shifters was PTO control but when I move the lever up and down there is no change to anything I can tell.

3. Park. I see the P on the shifter, but it really does not seem to click or bump into or seat itself in any way when I attemp to put the lever there. If I were to find this P position, what gear should the other be in? 1st? On a tractor this size is it safe to park it in R - 1 or L - 1 or will that break the transmission? How to park properly is a concern...

4. There is a foot lever on my left side back a bit that swings another lever out from the center. Is this a diff lock or something like that?

Thanks for any info! 12425DDC-F573-457E-9D8F-CFF9463572DC.jpegEBB5DFE7-C5B1-48FF-8CA8-039AFB58372E.jpeg

Welcome to TBN
1st question are you referring to ign or light switch? If you're referring to light switch then IIRC W=warning,B=bright,D=dim, F=field. question 2 lever by operators left heel when sitting in seat must be forward for pto to engage. question 3 gearshift lever 1-2-3-4 must be engaged in any one of the 4 speeds before other lever will go into park. question 4 lever furthest back on LH side is diff lock.

Thx! Sorry I’m referring to the key actually. I have no markings. Insert key it’s center upright like vertical. It will then go one click left or 4 clicks right. 4 and 3 seem to both be lights and run, 2 no lights and run, not sure on 1. Never seen a key have so many positions!

Not sure what you’re talking about under my left heel. Gonna go look.

So what about the yellow knob lever in between the shifters?

Photo below shows light switch for 2030 that I remember when I sold 2030's when they were new. 2nd photo is pto shaft disconnect lever(key 1) that I stated was "by left heel" not under left heel. You previously stated you knew that lever with yellow knob between gear shift levers was for pto so I didn't mention it but yes forward engages pto & rearward disengages pto. On subject of ign switch key straight up is off, left of straight up is accessories, 1st position to right of straight up is "ign on", then next position is "start" which is spring loaded. I don't remember seeing an ign switch for JD 20-55 series utility tractors with 4 key positions to the right BUT I have "Oldtimers disease" LOL. Can you please post a photo of the backside of ign switch?

I was employed at a JD dealership from '66-'87

Does your serial number end in "L" or "T" that might make a difference for the key switch.
I have not tried to turn my key switch to the left, only right to ON, and "more right" to START, which is spring loaded back to ON.

Flat steel lever on left side mechanically engages the PTO shaft to drive shaft with a shift collar inside the case. Forward to engage

Yellow knobbed lever between shifters engages the hydraulic PTO clutch to cause the PTO shaft to turn. forward to engage

MY 2030 (1974) has to be in 1st gear to put it in PARK. The 1 -4 shift lever hits a spring loaded lever, in key 2 of the drawing, that opens up a spot for the Range- Park lever to engage. There is a spring inside the large diameter part of the Range - Park lever that lets it bend to engage the Park position.

Thanks. Park is solved. Photo here of the key housing from back side. I still cannot affect the PTO so I’m assuming something is broken in this regard. I made a lil video just now to show. PTO test - YouTube

To TBN. Great little video.

I am from Clarksville and have driven up and down US41 and now I24 so many times that I could probably do it with my eyes closed.

Ha small world!!! We live on Hwy 41 between Beechgrove exit 98 and and Buchanan exit 89, I think. Half mile south of Hoover's Gap community center. All of last year there was a sign on the road side for Arya Hammocks. If you saw that ever, that's us!

Sorry, I don't remember seeing the sign, but I do remember Hoover's Gap Church.

When looking in jdparts for info, noticed in the decal labels a not about order of engagement/disengagement for the PTO levers.
As seen in the attached image. Suggest you find a service tech manual for your 2030. May be well worth the investment.

Part of the confusion about the ign switch(AL19890) on your tractor is because your tractor was built for European sales not N. American sales. 2030's built for N. American sales utilizes ign switch(AR58126) plus 2030 built for N American sales didn't have fuse box on LH side of dash as shown in one of your photos.

In your video, it looks like when you push the PTO lever forward, it does not stay, but flops back. Forward, PTO should operate.
The pedal you are pressing is the differential lock. It does not affect the PTO.

Missing is the mechanical lever my tractor has for the PTO. You can see where the shaft for the lever on your's has a plug (left side transmission case), and cast on the case is end view of PTO shaft with a guard over it, forward one has an arrow to show it's turning.
Your may be coupled at all times and NOT need this lever.

It looked like the lever between the shifters was not staying in the engage position. If that's not the problem, you could have a worn PTO clutch or broken hydraulic line for the PTO clutch.

As TxJim said, your 2030 is a Manheim built tractor built for European sales. The key switch is a combination ignition and light switch. The pto seems to be running all the time? Have you tried to attach anything to see if it runs under a load? I am guessing you may have a broken pto brake band or broken internal oil line for the brake that is allowing pto to turn when off due to the normal drag of oil in the clutch plates in the wet pto clutch. Apparently the European model did not have the left lever for shifting pto out of gear. There are test ports on the top of the shift cover where you can test pressure for pto clutch and brake. If both pressures are around 140 psi, then most likely the pto brake band is broken or worn out. Tractor needs to be split to replace it. If pto brake pressure is low, an internal line is probably broke, or the pto valve and/or lever may need repair.

Ok so quite possibly something costly is wrong in regards to the PTO and being able to control it. I can live with that possibly for a while, as I only bush hog fields and work a driveway. I'll put a guard in place of course. I'll put an overrunning clutch adaptor like I did with my last live PTO tractor, assuming it works as expected having a PTO always running isn't a showstopper unless this scenario would cause damage in some way.

Gotcha on the key thing. Makes sense. My classic slice of American tractor is European. Lolol.

I know where you are then. Yes, a very nice area, but there are a lot of those in TN.

One of my favorite areas is just north of the Tennessee river bridge on US41 going into Chattanooga.

OK so from your input and your input on other threads too (go internet!) it seems like with my PTO I've learned:

1. PTO is possibly an Independent PTO due to the engage/disengage lever being between the shift levers. A few threads lead me to believe this while a few others leave me in doubt. Just a curiosity.

2. PTO should engage/disengage via center up/down lever. It does not seem to do this. Perhaps I should put a bush hog on it as next step to see how it performs under load.

3. I have no left foot PTO disengage. Only a diff lock lever, to my understanding.

4. It sounds like perhaps the PTO brake or clutch assembly is failing, which I can test for pressure somehow around the base of the shifters. I see two green bolts, two black bolts more towards the steering column. I would like to test this if I can figure out how. Between myself and my neighbor we have the tools to accomplish, I'm handy just not a mechanic and not much tractor experience.

Photo of what I see attached. I'd love to be able to test and determine the problem without hauling back to shop. FYI the shop didn't say a word except "it has a live PTO" but the number one requirement for me to take it off the lot was to be able to go home and start bush hogging. I guess I can, but kinda irritated.
