Do you have to stop and use the clutch to shift between forward and reverse?
Yes you have to use the clutch to forward/reverse.
The shuttle is synchronized, so you don't have to be at a complete stop to forward/reverse. But it is easier on the clutch and synchronizers if you do.
The main transmission is synchronized so you can shift on the go. (clutch needed to shift).
You need to stop to change ranges. (high/low range)

Trying to stay below $13k total, for tractor plus implements. After watching a few vids of the different transmissions, I think I might prefer the Gear/Shuttle Shift. Powershift would be fine too. I know you have to use the clutch with the Gear models, but I see no real difference between powershift and shuttleshift as you still have to use your hand to change from forward to reverse.

Guys, again, appreciate the help. I realize it's my choice and my $, but trying to make an informed decision. I've watched all the videos I can to evaluate what I should look for...but wish I could find a farmer to do the inspection for me when I check it out!

Just thinking about all options, what are your thoughts about MFWD and 4WD?

I think you can get a newer tractor with less hours for those $$. What part of KY are you in?

What he said. Probably a better looking one as well. On thing that does kill them is sitting outside. Everything just oxidizes and degrades.

Check out Valley Farm Equipment in Science Hill Ky. Their site shows a bunch of tractors in your price range. They are like 100 miles from Frankfort-nice drive and you can actually SEE what they’ve got. A nice little 22 horse Kubota with FEL and belly mower for $9900

Looks okay to me for a tractor of that vintage. I would never ever again own a tractor without a quick attach bucket, I would pass on that particular model for the fixed attach bucket alone.

1300 hours...."it will need a new clutch pretty soon".

That is only a maybe!
I split my Ford 1920 at 1100 hours for a clutch, because I had it mostly apart for a complete refurbish anyway.
Clutch was in excellent condition.
No need to replace, but I did, because I already had the new one.

Always a maybe with a used anything (except a hydraulic shuttle which is why it's all I run). All depends on how the previous owner(s) used the clutch and of course that is always a crapshoot. A dry clutch will ALWAYS be the weak link in any driveline, NO EXCEPTIONS.
