Re: 1st time changing oil in B2400...Murphy\'s Law

I know what you mean about the manuals; they're terrible. It's kind of like interpretive reading. When I changed the hyrdo oil in my B7500, I think 90% of my time was spent trying to match the drawing in the manual to the actual tractor.

Even then I didn't get it right; someone here steered me in the right direction.

byrk, get the tractor and put a for sale sign on it immediately.
You don't deserve a tractor, or anything that you're doing maintenance on.
Running the tractor while draining the oil? Oil is $2 a quart that's a $15,xxx tractor!
If you have an oil filter and you change the oil, you now have cleaner dirty oil in your tractor.
A filter is about $6 and that's a $15,xxx tractor.

Sorry about being rough but you have some serious learning to do.

Bo,

That ain't rough!

You are absolutely right...I do have some serious learning to
do. I've learned quite a bit already, and folks in this group
help out a lot. I'm not quite ready to sell the tractor though.

BTW, I didn't "run the tractor while draining the oil". I never
drained the oil! Nor did I run the tractor while draining anything. Maybe you misunderstood what I wrote...that doesn't mean I didn't do something equally silly, though!

As far as your comment about the filter, wellll, I'm not
going to sell the tractor on that comment, either. At 100
hours the manual says to change the oil, not the filter.
That's at 50 and 200 and every 200 thereafter. Now, based
on reading what Bird and others (including you!) have
said, I think that changing the filter whenever I change the
oil makes sense. Thanks for the suggestion!

As you once said when you were younger: "I ain't the smartest person in the world, just one of the better looking ones."

Later!

Just bringing light to something obvious:

When you check your oil, remove the dipstick and wipe it off with a clean rag. Then re-insert it, wait 3 seconds, remove it and read the level on the stick. This will insure an accurate reading.

Regarding replacing the filter with each oil change: do it, clean oil is cheap insurance.

And when checking it warm (always advisable) make sure you wait for a few minutes to allow time for all the oil to drain back into the sump so you get an accurate reading.

byrk, okay you can keep the tractor, and I am learning to read all over again.... It is true, I ain't the smartest person in the world, just one of the better looking ones. Also, they don't pay me to be smart either....

Re: 1st time changing oil in B2400...Murphy\'s Law

I didn't even consider the bi-speed gear box, sorry!!! Did you check the front axle fluid? The round yellow button on the top left side of the axle has a dipstick for the axle oil level. it won't be easy, but you'll have to pull and twist at the same time to remove it. If you grease the o-ring before you put it back in it will be a lot easier to check your level with. I believe kubota runs the super udt in the front axle from the factory, but you might give it the sniff test to be sure( it'll smell just like the trans fluid!!) I changed mine to Mobil 1 synthetic but choose your lube with caution as there is a clutch in the unit. I would recommend any that states it's compatible with posi- traction differentials Good Luck and check that axle fluid.

Re: 1st time changing oil in B2400...Murphy\'s Law

"Last week I changed the oil for the first time in my B2400.
100 hours (the 50 had been done by the prior owner). I
thought I had the engine pretty warmed up but when I
dropped the screw only a cup or two came out. Figuring
There was plenty remaining, I ran the engine a while
and then drained more oil. Still slow, but more came out.
Mistake #1: I didn't check to see how much came out,
and ended up putting the old oil in a container that already
had used oil, so I could't go back and see how much I
needed to put back in! Talk about a newbie! Next time
I put the old oil in a container and measure how much
came out. I figured this out today (see later)."

Surely the above paragraph is a joke. Please wake me up--it cannot be. Look, I am a jackarse but I just have to say that is dumb--like really dumb.
YOU DO NOT RUN AN ENGINE WITH NO OIL IN IT---MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just like knowing how to make fire, men are imbued with that knowledge at birth. It is instinct and running an engine with no oil---knowingly--to get some more to come out--exasperation--what?
Well, I am pretty durn sure that you probably ruined the engine or at least did it harm that will eventually show up here as something like----MY Kubota Engine Broke and Kubota will not Cover It----Yeah, I would believe that cuz I would not cover that either and the mechanic will know when he looks at the bearings what you did. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

"Anyone have any other thoughts? Even "You are truly an
idiot" is ok ;-)"
Yeah, I could go that, might want to try draining the engine oil next time and not emptying the transmission and running the engine with both no engine oil or transmission oil. J

Re: 1st time changing oil in B2400...Murphy\'s Law

> YOU DO NOT RUN AN ENGINE WITH NO OIL IN IT---MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my defense of fire-making capability, I said that about
a cup of oil had come out, not the 3.2 quarts that should
have. I knew the oil capacity and the dipstick said I wasn't
low. So, while your theological response is correct, it isn't
applicable to the paragraph you cited.

Had I said "I drained 3 quarts of oil and ran the
engine to warm up the remaining .2 quarts so that it
would drain" that would be a different story, perhaps
warrenting your all-caps theological response.

The issue of running the engine after a cup of oil was
drained was related to several posts found here about
how slow the oil drains and the recommendations to
drain a warm engine. I knew that I hadn't drained the
oil and thought (very much incorrectly...I said I was a
newbie) that it was due to the temperature of the engine.

There are a number of reasons why this experience
happened. 1) Lack of my experience, both with tractors
and this this particular tractor, 2) Poor manuals (location
and description of oil drain and the manual has no
description of the bi-speed case nor of the drain plug
that is close to where the manual does say the oil drain
plug is).
