The shaft on the tail wheel probably got bent a little which kept it from being able to rotate properly. Not unusal to happen to an old cutter or new. That was probably done by operator error before you bought it. You need to learn to STOP when something isn't working right, or you get the result you did, a break.

The hydraulics on your tractor have some problems, probably cylinder wear. Take the cylinders to a shop and have them rebuilt.

Position control is the most popular type on compact tractors of today. When you move the lever, the hitch moves accordingly and when you stop moving the lever, the hitch goes to neutral and keeps the implement where you set it (if all is well).
The older hitches require that you move the lever and when you have the level you want, you move the lever back to neutral manually. A little harder to get just what you want, but doable.

This is the type you have, and you have to remember to move the lever back to neutral when you obtain level.

I think you have the Continental gas engine, right? I think beenthere is correct that the governor is not working properly, but also just check the linkage for bends as this occasionly is guilty of causing dramatic jumps in speed.

( Here is a pic of the rotary cutter, the sides are a little dented, is that normal for an old cutter? )

Yes. Like many more, she's probably seen her share of rocks and limbs. Don't worry about it.

I don't think this is what he has. There is only going up or down and there is no position control, not even a neutral area. I spent a lot of time trying to determine why my TO-30 wouldn't work 'right' only to find out that there is nothing there buy 'draft control'. At least that is how I remember it, and this one sounds exactly the same. As well, Soundguy in a related thread mentioned the same thing, with Ford 2N, 9N and the TO- Fergies.

I only continue to discuss so our new member doesn't start chasing a problem that isn't a problem, but just the way it is. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had that governor problem, and all I did was remove it, clean it up real well of the gunk and dry, dirty grease. It worked great after freeing it up. Maybe it will work for this one as well.

By the looks of the broken wheel, to me someone has added a yoke that won't caster. It needs a bent arm from the pivot down to the axle to caster.
Maybe my rotary cutter will show that. I'll see if I have a pic to post. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Chris,
Look at the the throttle rod that runs forward to govenor. Right behind your dash, above air cleaner is a clamp with spring attached. On this will be what looks to be a leather washer. This will with time wear or get hard and sorta glazed over. This washer is what holds throttle lever in place, preventing it from vibrating up or down. If it is real dry and hard sometimes a few shots of oil will bring it back to working condition. This would be the first place I'd look for your problem. Also, the linkage is adjustable, so maybe a little tweaking with that will work.
As to holding an implement where ya want, go to this site and check out the 'Zane Thang". I don't own this myself, but I've heard many 8N/9N/Ferguson owners wonder out loud how they ever got along without one and have given it thumbs-up reviews. Take a look and decide for yourself. Your hydraulics are leaking down, so your RC will slowly drop. The pump can be repaired and parts are available, but the zane thang would be a much easier option.
