I need to get a new camera. My current one chews up batteries so when I went to get it they were dead. The last 3 mornings we have had a regular parade of deer through our back yard. This morning a doe was browsing within 10 ft of the kitchen window. I felt like I could reach out and touch her. It is only 50 feet to the nearest greenery so they are all close.

I try to spot them early so I can put the panel in the dog door out to his run. He just barks a them.

This mornings total was 9 including one doe with twins. Occasionally There will be a buck back there.

It is fun to watch while we eat our breakfast.

I hear you Vernon, isn't country life great!! My dogs bark at the deer at times, the deer apparently have learned the dogs can't get out and just look at the dogs and go back to eating.

My timer is using more batteries than I would like, I get about 3-4 weeks out of them. I had a solar one that was a huge PITA and didn't last 1 year:mad: It was a Moultrie so no big surprise there!

This mornings parade was 3 does, 1 fawn and a 4 point buck (the first I have seen since February).

Got to make up my mind about a camera. Just want a point-n-shoot. I went whole hog with film with a Pentax SLR. Not going to do that again.

Dennis,
I just got a camera last week and am still playing with setups. Your camera must have a regular flash as it takes full color at night? ( That would cause more battery drain ) Mine is called Infrared, but I would call it "fake infrared" I used to make fake infrared pictures from color digital images a lot, just using software. My trail camera has an array of 34 LED bubbles in a 2 inch circle that emit a pinkish-red flash that I can see at night. The deer probably can too unless they are color blind.
Humans can't see IR and a real IR camera costs thousands. No problem; this little toy only cost $89. It switches to B&W automatically before total darkness as you can see and is still backlighted by the sunlight.
We had just removed the electric fence and scraped the corn away with the FEL at noon and I threw a few ears to the side to attract them. They had been there eating on the corn before I even took the camera down. The twins were really crazy about the green bean plants. I think one tried a Jalapeno pepper and learned a quick lesson!
Have you used both types of cameras and found a real preference for the regular flash that takes color images at night?

Ron, I haven't bought an IR yet, but have used a couple my friends have. So far I like the regular flash for the reason you mention (color). The IR seems to take a brighter photo though, but they do look a little like a martian.:)

I have Kodak editing software that came with my camera that I use to enhance photos at night if they are out if flash range.

Basically what I have found with the 10 or so that I have messed with, most take good daytime photos. The biggest factors to me are flash speed and flash range.

This little buck was not going to tolerate the coon, I have never seen this before. Food is a protected commodity here in our drought.

Got 3 small food plots disc and planted yesterday. The ground was nice and moist from the previous days rain and it looks like we got just over 1/4" last night sometime after 12 midnight.

I planted cheap feed oats and 10 pounds of Austrian winter peas since I am skeptical over future rain fall, but who knows. 40% chance today and tonight and 20-30% Wednesday and Thursday, I may get lucky.

You need a pear tree..
Yesterday we began trimming a pear tree that we just use for pollination.
Since the job isn稚 done we left the branches on the ground last night. 34 pictures of the mother and her twins resulted between 8:34 pm and 5:12 am today. We figured they would like the leaves as they keep the low branches trimmed and rear up to knock the fruit down to eat it all the time. I haven稚 got a picture of that yet but see them doing it in the daytime. This is about 40 yards from the house so easy to watch.

I had the same problem, and also wasted money on batteries and even worse, missed out on pictures that I might have gotten.

I bought the moultree solar cell and it lasted a few months. I'm done with that company, and anything they sell. My feeder and game camera are both 12 volt. I did that intentionaly. I bought a 12 volt solar panel from Northern Tool that is quite a bit bigger then the Moultree cheapy, and attached it to the side of my feeder. It's probably been 3 years, and it's still going strong. I have had to replace the battery once, but otherwise, it works 24/7 and powers both the feeder and the camera.
