Yes my plans are for going B-100 all the way,,,,,,, Taking pics of the filter now i just hacksawed in half ....... Sure dont look stained red to me ..... If folks would just sit and listen to that tale told by fuel suppliers and Goverment about that Red dye staining things that would mean that the dye could be removed..... Does anyone really think that they would put a dye in that Filters and tanks could make the dye come out of the fuel and stain....... Not ........... The person wanting to knbow how i knew the tanks was full... I have been around diesels all my life and a quick sniff iof the exhaust tells me its off road fuel ....

In my experience, off road doesn't stain filters or tanks. If we need to change a tank truck from dyed fuel to undyed, all we do is put a few hundred gallons of undyed fuel in the tank and pump it into a dyed tank. The truck can now transport undyed fuel and it passes IRS inspection.
Just my experience.

Hey don't chew my head off. I am just passing along what my fuel supplier told me. They said the test they do to see if you have dyed is to stick a white rag covered stick in the tank and pull it out. If it has red to it, it is non-taxed.

I don't know about you but I am unwilling to wait for a hundred gallons to go through my truck to save some money on fuel taxes. My luck I would get stopped when only 99 gals went through /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just exaggerating!

To my little pea brain, what the fuel supplier told me made sense that it would dye the filter, especially since the fuel filter is paper.

My mistake, I guess, for listening to them. Scare tactic?

Just went out and did my own filter test. Briggs was right...wet brown paper. I wiped it with a white rag and didn't see anything to indicate it was red dye.

Sorry for the confusion.

Glad I tested my filter, after looking at it, it needed changing. Thanks Briggs.

Good thing you mentioned the IRS rules that permit a refund of taxes regarding on-road diesel fuel use when it actually is used for off-road.

Turbo-Tax has a section in their software that helps you calculate your refund.

The caveat is.....keep your receipts.

( Since I don't use off road diesel (don't use enough diesel for this to matter, not to mention there's no place nearby to buy it), I won't be using the IRS forms, but it's good to know they exist. )

If I understand you right, you are buying taxed diesel fuel & using it off-road?

Then you are _supposed_ to be using that form, you are the one who needs it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It is a refund to those who are not traviling the highways, but only have access to taxed fuel.

The dye itself does not 'stick' to anything in particular - it's in suspension in the fuel, but it takes several tank-fuls to ever dilute it down enough to not be 'found' in your tank - it is persistant in staying in the fuel mix. If one used 2 gallons in an emergency, I'd fill tank, run it low again to use up as much dye as fast as I can.

Any licenced diesel vehicle on the highways is subject to this inspection - doesn't matter if you are loaded or not, privately owned, etc. It is more or less a random pull-over & the white rag test.

The fines are high, I would worry about it. Some.

( I can get all 3 nearby and don't care about the cost. Which one is best for winter use in a TC35D. In CT we get below zero half a dozen times a winter but single digits and teens are pretty common. I've never used additives either. )

Kerosene is a #1 grade
Diesel and fuel oil are a #2 grade of the same product

The differences between on and off road diesel is the dye, which is used to indicate level of taxation. The government requires the dye so that it can be easily checked to make sure that highway taxes have been paid on the fuel.

If you are using fuel for your tractor and purchasing the on road fuel then you need to contact someone in your area who uses a lot of off road fuel and find out where they get it at. We get our diesel at a bulk plant, and do not pay the highway taxes for it. There are still some taxes, but not near the taxes you pay for the on road fuel.

*I don't know if I understand what you are wanting or not, but **stations in my area have off-road diesel pumps that don't have road tax. )

*He is asking since he is putting the fuel in a drum instead of an on road vehicle can he pay the off road price instead of the on road price?
**Boy I wish they did here. That way I wouldn't be getting charged on road prices for off road fuel.
