2 speed tranny vs 3 speed. Is it really a big deal?

If I was buying a hst besides my buggy I would want 3 ranges. Like mentioned low is to slow and high is to fast sometimes. It gives you more options to dial in your working speed

AH - Dodge Man - that does make a difference.

On my 2320 I haven't seen much limitation in having two ranges. They overlap. I use high range for mowing and snow plowing. Low is used only for snowblowing and blade work, or maneuvers in tight spots. Seems to me most people who say you need three ranges have never owned a two range machine.

I've had two speed and three speed HST and use the middle speed about 90% of the time. That mid range is just right for most jobs.

My last HST tractor had 3 ranges and 3 speeds in each ( a Case 1130 ) and I preferred it over the 3 ranges with 2 speeds in each I have now. Only because med. range was mush more versatile.

And I've looked at all the other brands. There is both a JD and K dealer in my town and both are very good so it's going to be Green or Orange.

Did you look at the new Yanmar YT235? Nice, high feature tractor with three range HST. Japanese quality and supplier of engines for John Deere.

I live not far from you in Marshall, VA and there are several Yanmar dealers around. McMichael's near Gainesville recently switched from Kubota to Yanmar and New Holland.

Talk about out dated I was thinking a power glide trans (69) and turbo glide (73) chevy truck trans.

Stay with the three speed for sure no matter what brand you choose.
I run in medium 90% of the time. Rarely use low and high is only used on
the road.

I agree with this. Pretty much what I do as well.

PM sent, I’m right down the road and have 2 machines for sale. Not sure if your interested but you could come check them even if your not to get an idea anyway. One is a 2 range HST the other is a Power Reverser.
I think picking the right size machine is most important closely followed by getting the right transmission. I never needed more than 2 ranges on an HST, wouldn’t hurt to have 3. I can see how 2 ranges with a PR or Shuttle would be an issue for sure. Best of luck, Rye.

Thanks tractorable. I've been by McMichael's. Last time I was there they were selling yanmar and kioti. did they get rid of Kioti? It's about 30 miles from me and I didn't get a warm fuzzy talking to them. That's a long way to go if something goes wrong with the Yanmar. I've sat on a YT235 and it definitely seems like a lot of machine.
