Hey! By the way. Is it doing much damage to run it dry if I keep it in 2wd?

yes it will do damage, the bearings are all still turning in there whether your in 2 or 4wd. just a little less strain on them. buy some cheap oil and dump in there if your gonna use it and top it off as needed.

Fully agree with what hanson1999 said. No oil no good.

If its leaking that bad I would use thicker oil untill I could get it fixed. Some gear oil or even some STP engine treatment.... Very thick like honey.

Thank goodness my manuals coming next week. Tractors use THF to lubricate the bearings? I've got some catching up to do.

Are they leaking out the cap, as shown in pic 3? The cap in the pic looks bent? Those caps are just press fit and they hold the oil in each side, if they are bent and leaking bad, you are going to need new caps, properly pressed in. I found the screw on cap to a full sized oxygen bottle (from oxy/acet welder) is a perfect fit to hammer the cap in, in an emergency

I have had them litterally fall out unnoticed, dirt got in and gears had to be replaced. So be very careful with them. Inspect them carefully. They should not leak!! I suppose everyone should check theirs periodically as I have had 'em fall out a couple times. NOT a good set up at all!

Good luck !

PS: By the way, they are called the "Final Drive Spindle CAP".

Is this a problem on 4WD tractors only or should the rest of us be concerned about it. I honestly did not know that there was oil in the front end to keep up.

I hope you are lucky enough that new caps will be all you need. You mention the oil looking "glittery". That glitter is metal filings, so at least some damage has probably occurred. There is some normal break-in wear with a new machine so we can hope for the best. When you install your new caps, clean all oil residue from the housing and coat the outside edge of the cap with some loctite sealant. John Deere sells a loctite product called High Flex sealant that is made for this purpose. It helps seal the cap and also acts as a "glue" to hold it in place.

Also, I don't think you mentioned how old your tractor is. Could it still have warranty? If you post your serial number or PM me with it, I can check warranty info for you.

That spindle cap is for sure bent. The previous owner must have been running up on those lava rocks.

If I am looking at jdparts correctly the part is called a "plug", it is P/N LVU19403 and cost $9.71. You have to buy sealant also.

Hopefully that is all that is wrong.
