2007 Tundra vs F250 5.4

Had my 07 Tundra with the 5.7 liter for about 3 months and have about 5000 miles on it. Getting 17.3 mpg in normal back and forth to work driving. Got 18.2 on my last long trip. Great truck. Raced a DOdGe Hemi the other day and it wasn't even a contest. Hard to feather the gas when accelerating from a stop as 1st gear in the 6 speed tranny is low and the rear axle ratio with the towing package is 4.30:1. Tows my 20 ft. toy box with ease. Not even breathing hard at 100 mph. The oil filter sucks! Remains to be seen if it will hold up as good as my ole 86 POS 250 that has 500,000 miles on it (3rd engine). Toyota has had some bad 5.7 liter engines but so far they are just installing new ones.

Regardless of manufacture, that is disappointing. For a new truck, when gas/diesel is continually creeping up, why couldn't they design that with better fuel mileage. This is not just a Toyota thing; it is across the board. Are they in such a HP race that they can not get some decent mileage too? I had a '64 Ford F100 that was beat up, and still got that kinda mileage empty. With a 292, 2bbl, and 3 on the tree.

Not a dig on your truck, but the industry. 40 years of technology, they get lower emissions and more HP, but still mediocre gas mileage.

Unfortunately, there are some things in the way of better gas mileage, the laws of physics. It requires a given amount of energy to push a truck the size and weight of the Tundra with the coefficient of drag present down the road. You can put in smaller engines or bigger engines but you can't cheat physics. That is why the 5.7 liter V8 engine is rated the same gas mileage as the 4.0 liter V6. The 4.6 liter V8 is actually rated worse. I looked at Chevys and Fords (tried a DOdGe and have now sworn off of them) and the Toyota makes a lot more horsepower than all but one Chevy and it is rated at 12 city and 14 highway and is still a pushrod motor. Chevy has a hybrid but it isn't designed to tow much and I believe still is only rated 24 on the highway. I remember that Honda built a Civic HF in the 80s with a 1100 cc engine, manual trans, and extra tall gears. It got 50 mpg on the highway and didn't have any computer controls or 500 lbs of batteries to wear out. It was just small, light, aerodynamic and couldn't get out of its own way but it got great gas mileage. Until the American manufacturers start building vehicles with small turbo diesels, which is 80% of the market in Europe, we will have to put up with crappy fuel mileage. I read the other day a guy has figured out to use high-intensite radio waves to make saltwater burn. Of course, it didn't say how much radio wave energy was being used to make the saltwater burn. Probably more than was released as a result of the combustion of the water. You can't cheat physics but you can make sure you never buy a DOdGe pickup again in your life, like me! :D

Towing a 20 foot trailer at 100mph in a half ton truck. Why does that not sound like something that i would want to be in the same state with someone that was doing that.

Yes.

And Toy/Nissan are the worst because they're late to the party and have to "prove" themselves as makers of "macho" trucks. I think it's quite noticeable that GM, in revising their pickups, barely moved the hp ratings but instead saw significant gains in gas mileage. GM can get as much hp as they want out of their V8s, but instead are showing some wisdom.

I used to think pushrod engines were old school, but if you look at them rationally they make a lot of sense for truck engines where high rpm isn't needed and packaging is a major issue.

I am the proud owner of an 07 5.7L Double Cab Limited Tundra. I have to say that this is, by far, the nicest truck that I have ever owned. I previously owned a GMC 1 ton Crew Cab Dually with a Banks kit. It was rated just shy of 400hp and 750 ft lb or torque. There is no comparison as far as towing. The GMC, by far, will blow the Tundra away.

I went looking for a half ton pickup since I no longer have extreme hauling requirements. I drove the new GMC, Chevy, and multiple Fords. When you get in this machine, it's over! It's a race truck. I also have heard about a supercharger coming and also the diesel option in either a half or 3/4 ton offer.

The big three better get their act together! If they do, I'll be there!!!

That is a good looking truck. I wanted one bad when I was in need of a 1/2 ton 4x4 last may. I drove a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Nissian, and Toyota. The Chevy was just plain ugly to me but I did like the rear locker. By the way its made by Eaton and you can get them installed in any truck for about $500, just go to a tranny shop. The Dodge Hemi seemed like it had tons of power but no grunt for pulling. The Nissian they were very proud of. Long and short of it was the Toyota and Ford were in the same $$$ ball park but I could get the Ford with leather, sunroof, and sat radio plus other small items for the same $$$. I went with the Ford but will look at Nissian and Toyota again in the future. Maybe they will have a 1 ton diesel down the road.

looks like that Toy has a week frame!

It is boxed to the back of the cab then it is a riveted double frame "C" to the back of the axle then it is just a "C" past that.

Where would the weak link be in this design?

Look at the photo again...the metalwork of the body by both wheel wells gives an optical effect that it is curving upward under the drivers door...I think that is what caught his attention...:D
