Yes I love the 10/22. I even passed on the tradition to my daughter at 3 YO who loves to run through all 10 shots by braille.

Here's that 3yo first time shooting.

Doesn't Browning make their .22 auto any more? It was bottom eject and to me anyway, made the 10-22 feel like a club in comparison.

Seems like most people like the 10-22 but I always liked the Browning or the Nylon 66.

For non-auto's, hard to beat a Winchester 61 or a Marlin 39 or any of the fine bolt action .22's.

My cousin had a real nice Remington single shot Bolt action 22 when were in school back in the 50s.

I have a J C Higgins that my uncle bought me 57 years ago. I also have a 10-22 and some other guns. Use a 12 GA Win don't have to see as well LOL.

My first firearm was a single shot, bolt action Remington. I guess I got it in 1951, but don't remember the model number. I traded up to a Stevens semi-automatic in 1956; used a lot more ammo, but didn't get any more squirrels and rabbits.:D

10-22's are very popular and have zillions of accessories. However, I bought a Remington 597 for myself for x-mas with the drab olive green plastic stock. The main reason was that the 597 had the fattest fore end of all the guns at the dealer. Every other gun I picked up had this skinny piece of wood or plastic up front. They felt like holding a steak knife handle. The 597 actually flares outward at the bottom and becomes wider. To me it seemed like a world of difference. It fills your left hand.

A new 597 with scope was $179 three months ago. Get one of those metal spinner targets with 3-4 spinners. They are tons of fun and cost about $15. They look really cool after being hit about 250 times out of a brick of 500. No need to walk downrange to reset and your shooting has immediate visual and sound feedback. A brick of 22's is under $10 and will last at least a couple hours.

Make sure you buy a 22LR rifle so you can buy the cheap ammo. Other 22 rounds can get very pricy.

He got it new back then .
It would fire short long and long rifle shells.
We did a lot of target shooting with the shorts cause a box of them were a lot cheaper than the other amo.
As far as I know he still has this gun - I will have to ask him some time if he does have it yet.

I might add... I shoot right handed guns left handed so I don't really care for auto's except for pistols. Don't like the expended casing in my face!

mark

Mark,

I too shoot from the south side...don't all casing fly in your face?:D

Thanks everybody for all the replies.
I think I know less about buying a gun than I did about Buying a Tractor. LOL
Some Questions:
Clip or tube loading?
Lever or bolt action?
Would like one that uses long, long rifle and short cartridges.. .

The site where I found a date of manufacture for the Winchester is this one, and I have no idea how accurate it is.

Bird,

The blue-book of guns will tell you the year manufactured...

Semi-auto 22s are awesome. I personally own the 10-22 that seems to be the overwhelming favorite, but...the gun I have loved more than any other was the gun Bird mentioned...the Winchester gallery rifle...a pump 22 that was incredible. I think Rossi makes a knock-off that I have also shot that is alot of fun. I have never shot a more user friendly rifle, but I am a huge fan of the pump action.

You've gotten great advice...either marlin or ruger are great semi-autos, but I would encourage you to shoot the Rossi prior to purchase.
