I have a 2305 with 170 hours on it. After running the tractor for about 30 minutes. I attempted to turn it back on about 15 minutes later and I only got a buzzing noise from under the steering wheel, with no engine turn over. It ended up being the glow plug relay. Also, when "shifting" the range selector to/from high low (key at on pos.), another relay also buzzes. Voltage at the battery is 10V. Didn't get a chance to try another battery. Could this just be a bad battery? Any thoughts?

It is battery time my friend. The JD battery's have a history a quick and untimely deaths.

What would be a good replacement for it; mine is two years old.

Great... bought my 2210 in 2004, a ticking time bomb is it?

You are lucky you made it this far! have you ever checked to see if it's leaking? That is one of the biggest problems with them.

What would be a good replacement for it; mine is two years old.

Search the word "optima" here in the JD forums, they make a sealed battery that can take the vibrations and not leak over time.

I agree the JD batteries don't last long, but for some reason I continue to use them. Typically one individual cell will decide to short with no warning. Starts fine, use it a bit, shut it off, and only a single click when you go to restart. It is then easy to test the cells to find the shorted one, but so what. The battery is shot.

Corrosion is the other big problem even on the new machines. I helped that quite a bit though by using the full width cell cap that comes extra with the JD battery in the box. Most folks throw that away and just use the caps that are on the battery. I run a tube from the common vent port on the full width cap and route it below the tractor. When I had it exiting above the mower deck I could see the discoloration on the deck from dripping battery acid.

Well, I peek at my battery each time I clean the debris screen in front of the radiator, which is often in summer. Each fall I thoroughly clean the posts and recoat with the red stuff. First year I had it the battery posts got the white fuzzy stuff, then I cleaned them off good with baking soda/water mix and when dry sprayed the posts and cable ends with a heavy coat of battery terminal spray= It's a special red "paint" that seals against corrosion. Never had problem since.

Coating the posts is pretty much a requirement to prevent corrosion on them. I am familiar with the red stuff, but I just use axle grease. Readily available and works great. However does not solve the surrounding corrosion problems caused by vent leaks. Between the vibration and tilt angles during use batteries have a tough life in tractors.

I sold the stock JD battery within the first Month for the reasons that kennyd mentioned and installed an OPTIMA D-51 (positive terminal on the left side) , that was 3 1/2 years ago and I'm very happy , the D-51R is the same except the (positive terminal is on the right) ... Here is the information to see if one would work for you http://www.optimabatteries.com/_media/documents/specs/D51_D51R.pdf ...

The problem was the battery. I tried another battery last night, and she fired right up. Thanks for the replies!!

I have a 2210 with 160 hours. The battery seems fine for now, i.e., it isn't leaking. However, when the time comes to replace it (which may be just around the corner), is the Optima 51 worth twice what a conventional battery would cost? Thanks to others who have been down this road for any input.

John Deere has been closing that price gap. My JD replacement battery had always been about $80. When I bought a new one this year it was $125. That puts it much closer to an Optima price.

Starting batteries whether wet cell or AGM type are fine for tractors. In tractor use where replacements are readily available a Walmart battery should suffice, I normally get about 5 or 6 years out of the EverStart Max batteries for $70. In boating where you could have real problems with failed batteries out on the water I would go with a better brand of batteries, Odyssey or DieHard Platinum Plus available at Sears (made by Odyssey).

Whatever you go with, be prepared to come up with a way to hold the battery in place. I think your 2305 uses the tabs at the bottom of the battery to clip to, same as my 755. The Optima, as many other batteries, will not have the tabs. It is not difficult to add your own mounting method. Many others here have done it and can probably provide pictures for you. Just be sure you provide a secure mounting for the battery.

Interesting discussion that I just stumbled into. I am not having a battery problem now, but glad I learned what to replace with when I do. Based on this thread, I am amazed I'm at 6.5 years and 894 hours on the battery in my 2210. I wonder of region of country (weather conditions) factors heavily, although I can't imagine New England weather would be considered good for batteries. In any event, sound like you got your solution, but good thread.

Your nickname should be "LuckyLou":D

Hi kennyd:

I might agree with your "Lucky Lou" nickname, at least in the limited realm of batteries. However, as you'll recall from other threads of mine, including my most recent that you responded to, I've had those driveshaft issues: (i) broken fan, then (ii) my latest worn U-joint issue. I think the good luck and misfortunes get spread around to us all. That said, I'd rather replace a few batteries than have a third issue requiring driveshaft separation:)

Best,

JDLou

but I just use axle grease.
My Father did the same with a slight twist.

In an old butter container, he mixed axle grease with baking soda 50/50. Had a small acid brush that stayed in the butter tub (notched for the handle).

An uncle of mine who was an original Mr. Goodwrench taught me to use vaseline in a pinch for battery terminal corosion prevention. Works good and is readily available in most hoseholds. Oh, and leaves your hands oh so smoooth. :D

I have a 2005 (4 years old this month) 2305 with the original battery and maybe 130hrs. :O)
I guess I should be waiting for it to die. I haven't noticed any significant corrosion and it still seems pretty strong. It always lives inside though and isn't exposed to very cold weather.
