2305 won't start

Neighbor has a 4 yr old 2305 and it won't start. He said he backed it into his garage, pulled the throttle back to idle it for a minute and it died and would not refire. He changed the fuel filter, which was kind of nasty, but it still won't start; turns over fine, but no fire and or no smoke. Looks like a no fuel situation to me? I'm reasonable handy with engines(gas), but have little diesel experience. Checked all the safety switches and they all seem to be functional. I noticed a small lever on the side of the fuel pump(not the injector pump)but can't find any info as to it's use.Any help would be greatly appreciated:confused2:

Checked the seat switch and trans in neutral switch, and pto off switch?

Not sure where to tell you where to look on that model, but if it is none of the safteys, check the fuel shutoff solenoid. Not sure if it is a typical JD problem but I have know a few on JD's to malfunction. Just last week we had to change one on a friends 790. All kinds of burnt crispies when we pulled the solenoid out.

Check fuses ,does he have dash lights if not blown fuse. Fuses up above fuel filter...Just right and up from fuel filter is fuel solenoid..2 or 3 bolts has wiring going to it,and I think 10mm. unbolt and see if tractor will start... If it starts you can put your finger in hole where fuel solenoid came from and push it will shut the fuel off and engine will quit...If it starts unplug fuel solenoid from electric conn. and put 12v to solenoid it will pull in and remove voltage it will let pin return to normal if it is good. May have to remove the bolts holding panel under dash still on right side .....
If it is good,,,,could be a diode where electric conn is at our very close to this ..
There is also a test you can do to see if fuel solenoid is good without removing... off tractor but other tells you tractor will at least start.

Update on the no-start 2305; the fuel solenoid seems to functioning and we have fuel to the injector pump, but, nothing beyond. It's presently at the selling dealer, whose Service Manager said he has never seen a 2305 with a bad injector pump; let's hope he's right

No, it wouldn't start with the solenoid removed; cracked all three injector lines and had no fuel present when rolling it over. I still think it's the pump

Yea mine would start.. with solenoid removed... and all fuses were good on his machine ,,,if so does sound like pump Bumer!!

Neighbor called dealer this morning, got the bad news, it's the pump The machine has only 350 hrs on it; service manager said he's going to lobby JD to take care of this, as it's apparent there was a problem with the pump(quitting this early in the game):ashamed: I wished him luck :thumbsup:

On the 2305 ,It's the fuel solenoid RELAY switch people.. I had the same scam pulled on me.. The dealer would not help me diagnose the problem.. I cracked the lines and only a tiny squirt came through all three during cranking.. I checked the solenoid and it pulled in(momentarily).. I took the pump to a specialized rebuilding shop to the tune of $1250.. Still wouldn't start and same tiny squirt from the lines when testing.. Finally after pestering the dealer he admitted i could remove the solenoid temporarily to see if it fired and whala, it did.. I'm wiling to bet big money the dealer charged you for a pump rebuild and never did one.. He just replaced the solenoid RELAY switch.. Total bait and switch scammer style.. Take it from someone who learned the hard way.. The solenoid has two coils inside it.. One for initial opening and one that holds the pin back while running.. This seems to be a case of planned obsolescence on the part of the john deere design team.. Make the customer think he needs a rebuild and charge for one while only replacing a 40 dollar part..
I never did get a new relay.. Just cut off the pin on the end of my solenoid and added a petcock to my fuel line.. I have to prime it with the little lever on the injector pump but no more starting problem.. Figured i would share this info as i hate seeing others spend big bucks to fix a tiny problem that should NEVER have happened.. Other than this issue the tractor is a great machine and BTW kubotas suck.. Trust me i have years of experience on this issue..
So to diagnose just remove the bolts from the solenoid from the tractor and let solenoid dangle. A tiny bit of oil will spill but nothing major, just don't run that way for long..The injector pump has an oil gallery inside it from the engine oil... If it starts it's the relay.. The pin on the solenoid presses a cutoff lever inside the injector pump.. Okay hope this helps you guys..
