2520 popping out of 4WD

From what other had said that might be true, I could only hope that there is not any damage being caused to the transmission if this were to be true.... How did you get it to stay in and not do that again? The 2520 is a foot activated lever so I can't see how it could go past a certain point? I just get the feeling my tractor was built on a Monday or Friday..:(

You are wrong about the foot activated lever. In the manual it says not to use your foot . I use only my hand and still have the problem. I also live in the Virgin Islands where there are no JD dealers so It sounds like I am in trouble if I can't fix it myself.

Time to weigh in. I have a 2720 with the same problem My tractor just went past 70 hours. We have exactly the same problem as I have a steep section of land that I cut with the MMM. I have a ballast box with about 200 lbs of led in it but I never have load in the Loader when I cut that field. Always on the down hill run , it will pop out 2 - 3 times per pass. I find it annoying because if the grass is wet I will pick up speed, which could be dangerous. There is no mud or anything that is holding it out ,and it engages properly when I shift into 4WD Is there an adjustment of any kind that I may try? The 2720 and 2520 are the same tractor except I have a little more HP @ 31.4 I believe the 2520 is 26 HP?

I don't believe there is any kind of adjustment on it if you go back and look at the schematic in one of the earlier post. It sounds like this is turning out to be a little bigger than expected, wander if we should start emailing this thread to JD......???

Yeah I posted a picture in an earlier post about not using your foot and using your hand. I too can feel mine engage by hand but it still pops out.... Wander how many other people would have the same problem if they tried it on a steep incline??

One more thing , I always stop before engaging the FWD and never do it on the fly, so I do not understand this problem. I am a by the book kind of guy and as such never used my foot , so this must be JD problem. I will be looking forward to your fix when you get one so I may attempt to fix it myself. As long as my dealer goes along with it.

Hi Tom
I don't have anything steep enough (at least I don't think so) where I can try this out. I've been in the woods with mine, and there are some fairly steep hills that I have gone up and down where I definitely needed 4WD.

There is one other place, but I've never had a reason to go down into it. I guess I could try it and see what does or doesn't happen.

I cut on really steep hills all the time, so steep that with out ballast I can just about make the bucket when it is empty hit the ground, I have never had the problem. Other than my tires being filled, there is no weight when I cut (besides myself). I don't cut with the FEL as it is way to dangerous to leave it on.

I do know that if I forget to put in 4wd it slides down the hills, not much of a fun ride, but as for it popping out, never had the issue.

I do know when I engage my 4wd, I feel it click twice.

Mine popped out a couple of 3 times today with a full bucket of dirt and rock. It didn't pop out going down the steep grade but going down a little one this time. It popped out in the same spot.... maybe I'm just not getting it engaged??? Man it shouldn't be this hard.

Greg I never sent it over yet, I was waiting until they got my chains in for the rear wheels so they can install them. I don't think I can go without anymore equipment right now, I have one chainsaw at Vernon Dell getting fixed another one on order that is back ordered till next week. Trying to get my firewood under control but so far I am losing!!!! I am still wandering if I have a problem or if this is a factory issue. After reading some of the other post on here it seems like it is not just me..... I really have to dig a little deeper before I let them rip the tractor apart for maybe no apparent reason. If they take it apart and the spring and ball bearings are intact, then what? That is what is kinda bothering me...:(

Tom has it ever popped out making sharp turns with a load? If it is a binding issue I would think a bucket full and tight turns would make it do the same. Just a thought.

Could the fork that moves the collar over the detents not be moving that collar far enough. What might feel like it is going in might not be a full engagement of the collar and detent balls and is popping out. Does this sound like a possbility? Just trying to come up with a reason.
