My new 2520 has been running ok for 8 days. Today while backing up I thought I was seeing smoke and my heart sank. I aslo noticed wet leaves and realized I must be leaking something. I immediately stopped and saw what I beleived was hydraulic fluid dripping from one of the power steering hoses. I started the tractor and thought if I turned the steering I would be able to identify which hose was the culprit. To my surprise it was leaking not from either hose, but from the bottom of this unit I have yet to identify.
There is a spray coming out of a pin hole leak on the pipe very close to where it is welded to some sort of round metal cover with three screws that I can feel (with the tractor off). I imagine the smoke was the fluid somehow hitting the hot engine or exhaust ?

My dealer is closed for the day so I will call in the AM, but I would like to be able to intellingetly tell him what the problem is.

I have added two photos the first shows most of the unit located on the left side of the tractor below the alternator, and the second photo shows the very bottom of the unit and a yellow arrrow from where I judge the spray to be coming from. The metal hose attaches via a weld to a round cover held on by three screws. Is this unit one of my two hydraulic pumps?

This must be a warranty item. I hope the dealer agrees and either sends out somebody to replace the cover and metal line on site or pickus up the tractor for a shop repair. Do they work on hydraulic lines in the field?

Hey smalltown
Sorry to hear about this problem you have.
I just went and looked at mine, and that line runs all the way back to the transmission. So it could be the pump that drives the hydro, not certain.
I tried looking at it on JD Parts site, but it's fairly vague.

In general, it sounds like a poor welding job. If the dealer is not to far and it is under warranty, take it in to the service center and let them fix it. If the dealer is far away, You could probably fix it, but they would have to see the leak, and with the part off, they might not agree. Maybe if you made a video, they might just give you the part.

Why are those loader mount bolts painted green? That is a dealer installed item..

As far as being painted green that's the way it was delivered.
Anybody know what that unit is?

glc24 not to unhappy it's been running great. As long as the dealer does right by me I will have nothing to complain about. Things happen :(

When the problem first occurred there was a real strong smell must have been burning hydro fluid on the engine or exhaust and it smelled a lot like cat pee!

It's the engine mounted hydraulic pump that supplies pressure to the implements. The transmission has it's own pump that provides the charge pressure and operates the 3PH and PTO clutch.

Thanks Doug. I called this AM and talked to the service manager. John Deere will cover this under warranty, but not pay for transport. So today or tomorrow I will see if I can locate somebody to help me load.
Sounds like this particular metal line is not normally in stock and might require ordering.

Still a very happy camper, just need to get over the hump!

That is your hydraulic pump, the pipe on the top with the rubber hose is the suction side of the pump, the line you stated that leaks is the pressure side or outlet. Not really a big fix.

Thanks Guys.
Thanks Gizmo I cound not find that in JD parts myself, but that sure looks like item number 3 .

I think there is a JD service manual CD in my near future.

Doesn't look that difficult to replace, but not sure about how easy to get at the transmission end of things.

For what these tractors cost, a service manual was the first item I bought. Did the same for our old JD 650. I figure it pretty much pays for itself the first time using it especially after many years go by and and issue shows up and no one has a clue what you are talking about.

"For what these tractors cost, a service manual was the first item I bought. "

I do the same thing...then, pray that Murphy's law holds up so that I won't have to use it...

That's the high pressure line from the pump and it's a factory defect. I bought a new 2720 and after 25 hours I had the misfortune of having mine blowing fluid all over the place. I called my dealer and had him check it out , At first they didn't want to replace it so I told him to be ready to take the tractor back and refund me my money. The leak was a split in the high pressure tubing which is rolled and electronically welded. some how they blew the welding job, However the real problem is replacing the line. Its a major pain in the butt to get the old one out and get the new one back in place. Please have your dealer do the job and save yourself some grief.

PS My leak was on the other end of that same line where it goes into the SCV . What a pain!

Wooden thanks. Yes made all the arrangements to drop it off at the dealer tomorrow.

That was the same exact line that blew out on mine with 25-30 hours on it, but mine blew out under the seat. Looks like they might have a problem with this line..... The mechanic showed me where it went and it bolted in the same exact place yours does! The dealer came and picked mine up and repaired it and brought it back.....

Would you guys post your vin numbers so the rest of us can see if we have units in that range?

Well I can't give you a vin at this moment as the tractor is at the dealler being repaired.

However I did get a call this morning from the dealer telling me they have replaced the bad line and my tractor is ready.

My failure was on the metal linne up againist the welded area on the hydro pump.
The dealer said he hasn't seen that before. I responded that I have talked to two other owners one with a 2520 and another with the 2720 and they both experienced the same hydro line failure.

Hoping the get the tractor back Saturday, and be back in the saddle

"Oh, we've never heard of a problem like that before"

I wish I had money for every time I've heard that before ;)
