The JD. is a neighbor of mine. I just keep it in working order for her. As for Yanmar's 2 from Spalding and Hoye and Fredricks for parts. The FM in the pic. was a CL. Spec.. The owner sold it to me for what was offered trade in on a bigger unit. 500.00$ on 2/08 and delivered it. He stated he was going to a Kubota and that My YM. was the way to go for a small compact.

Good evening, I've just finished reading your thread about the new head you had put on your engine back in 2007. This year, I had to install a new head on my JD 850 with the 3T80J engine. I purchased the second to last head available through John Deere. It is brand new, $1500. Anyway, the reason I'm contacting you is because when I reinstalled the intake manifold to the new head, it split before i ever reached the 18ft lbs of torque that the JD Technical manual specifies. I was wondering if you had any similar issues with yours? I'm ready to install the used intake manifold that i located from the middle of Pennsylvania but I don't want this to crack ether. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Put a straight edge across the block and manifold assuring they are not warped. If not, no reason the manifold should break. My 2 cents.

Agreed. Checked the brand new John Deere head, its good. Checked the intake manifold, it too is good. The gasket is brand new as well. Checked the double ended studs and they are good. I started to put the intake manifold on today and paid very close attention while alternating between tightening the nuts. It started to do the same things that the other manifold did just before it cracked and I had not even reached 10 ft/lbs. So I backed them off. Still head scratching at this point :confused3:

What do you see if you put the manifold up against the head with no gasket. Does it look like a good fit? Any evidence of air space? Will a small feeler gauge go in at any point?

"It started to do the same things that the other manifold did just before it cracked "

What was that, precisely? Can you post pictures of the cracked manifold, showing the crack and mounting surface?

Wow, even for JD pricing that is a deal. When my JD-850 head blew back in 2014, it was $2,500. Then I found the block also had cracks along with a bad cylinder. Thus, the JD850 was better off as trade-in value for a YM2610 that's basically the same tractor with power-shifting. Fredricks did a good job with the JD850 restore too.

WKY tractor salvage specializes in JD and the imported tractors. So, be on the lookout over there too.
