Ok J J. I have a 2520 JD, 2 years old. I have 2418 PSI and a 10.5 gpm. I am only going to get about 14 tons out of a splitter, no matter if its a 20 ton unit. Right? This was supposed to be a question.......I am trying :confused2::confused2::confused2:

2418 psi using a 4 in cyl with 2 in shaft, will produce a force of 15.19 T. If you use a 5 in cyl. the force goes up to 23.7 T

If you guys were to put a hyd gage in the log splitter, you will see what pressure it takes to split any piece of wood. It rarely gets up to the max pressure.

With the gage, you can also test the max pressure at full extend, cold fluid or hot.

I have a 1529 MF with a princes pump I run it on idle and it is faster than 2 people can keep up with on a 20 Ramsplitter splitter. I opened the engine wide open by accident and it broke a steel fitting. I had to take the filter off the return line it blew it off. Later

An example:

Using a 24 in log

Using 20 GPM on the splitter will produce an extend speed of 3.9 sec, and a retract speed of 2.9 sec.

Total cycle time of 6.8 sec. GPM's determines the speed.

Thanks J J. Thats helps a lot. :D

One more for you J J............if you throttle up the motor does it increase your psi ?

Probably not. Temp of the fluid may change pressure.

Not usually, the relief setting determines the max psi for the system. Higher engine speeds result in higher flow rates in gpm.

All these hydraulic components will last alot longer if you can keep the pressures lower.

Thanks for the tip!!!!!

I just ordered a new John Deere 2520. I am considering getting a 3 point hitch log splitter also. What would be the best one for this machine given the hydraulic flow is a total of 10.5. 5.5 for steering and 5 for implements. I'm not sure I can use a 20 ton and am concerned the 16 ton will not be powerful enough. Any help or first hand experience would be appreciated..
You call Doug at Ramsplitters he has a set up with a 20 ton and a princes pump beat any splitter you ever split with mine ms 1529 runs on idle it fast and none stoppable. I made my 20 ton electric and am going to order a 30 ton to go with my princes pump. I don't need speed I split a lot of rock cherry. Check Doug out. Later

Personally I like the 3 pt. splitters. Long story, someone gave me a Yanmar 3 pt splitter years ago before I had a tractor. I built a system around it with an engine, tank, etc. I worked fine but if you're like me you split wood seasonally so the thing sits around and you know those small gas engines, the carbs get messed up or the float goes bad and now you're out in the winter screwing around with it.
When I got my tractor I set up the splitter for the 3 pt hitch and the Imatch. Now I just plug it in and start splitting. Life is much easier and I don't have that little gas engine screaming while we're trying to work.

I saw some place a company makes a set up for a three stage pump to go on the power take off on a a tractor I don't remember the price but it was cheaper than a princes pump. It put out about 20 gpm on idle of your tractor so must have gears in there to speed up the rpm to around 2350 or so.
