since I have rear remotes on my TC-40 will I be happy with a tsc/northern log splitter run by the tractor hydraulics. I see the advantages of a seprate power unit but the budget says I can cut the price into the $600-700 range vs. the $1000-1200 range for a tow a long unit. Will the t 3 point unit do the job of 5- chords a year thanks I know there have been many disscussion about this but I can't search them right now for some reason

It will do the job.

For that matter, so will a splitting maul. It's just a matter of time, but even 'slow' is better than brute force, IMO /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It will work but may be slow, depends on the GPM of your tractor. For example my log splitter runs 15+GPM via 8hp B&S to a 24" cylinder and has a ~15 sec cycle time.

GreenThumb, I have the Northern Tool 3 point splitter on my TC40DA. I am reasonably satisfied with the performance. It is slower than the stand alone units I have rented in the past but it does the job. It cycles slower but wood that is usually tough to split doesn't seem to slow it down.

Northern offers a 4 way splitter wedge that fits over the existing wedge and I am planning on purchasing it. I think that will increase some efficiency at least on some of the smaller pieces.

The unit sells for $499 but I was able to save $75 as Northern gives away "in store" coupons at the state fair as well as home shows. The splitter comes without hoses and couplers so you can figure $30-40 on top of the cost of the splitter.

hello to all,
SLOW is safer. i know a person that lost
a finger on a splitter powered by a tractor.
the cycle was very fast, and of course more
dangerous.

I've used the TSC model for a few years, first with my old Ford 4000 and now with my TC40DA. I don't have a problem with speed. And for whatever reason, my wife loves to run the splitter /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. So we can do a good deal of wood in a pretty short period of time, with me loading/off-loading. I've never timed the cycle, but then I'm not all that quick myself.

So when a cycle time of 15 seconds is listed, what exactly does that mean? When I split, the wedge never goes all the way to the other end, only far enough to split, then I send it back. This usually means less than half the whole length is traversed. So does that mean a 7 second "real world" cycle time?

I started with a splitting maul. but got too old.
Bought a Bark Blaster. big screw that ran off the PTO, but it was too dangerous
Got a tsc splitter powered by the tractors hydraulics, but it was too slow.
Bought a B&S 5.5 hp engine with an 11 gal pump from Northern Hydraulics and used some old wheels and welded everything up to the tsc splitter and now I'm happy with the setup. It uses a lot less fuel than the tractor did.
