3-Pt Log Splitters - How Fast?

Just one bit of advice, look for a splitter that allows you to stand up when you operate it. I used a hydraulic splitter my folks had and after 10 minutes my back was killing me being bent over.

And, wings on each side of the splitting area to catch the split pieces that need to be split again will save you time and energy.

I purchased a Super Split unit two years ago and I am very pleased with it, however I think their prices are very high.

Excellent advice. Today I purchased an MTD (Troy Built/Cub Cadet/White/etc) model 511 at Menards for $968. It's a vertical/horizontal, towable, 21 ton, 5hp gas, splitter, and it has wings. It has the Techumsa engine rather than the B&S or Honda, and I wasn't thrilled about that until I discovered that I can replace the whole engine for like $120 if it croaks. I normally steer clear of MTD but this thing looks extremely solid. The reviews I found were all great except for the noise category, but I don't think I'll find a quiet one for less than double the money, and earplugs are cheap.

Thanks again everyone for the advice.

I vote for stand alone. Since I have a welder and had a bunch of free steel I made my own. Even with the free parts I could have bought ready made for the same I spent on the other parts.

Rental is the most cost effective in the long run, but in my opinion, only if you plan to split all your wood in one session. With your own unit you can split as you please.

I use my tractor to bring the wood to the desired location and split there so the 3pt splitter didn't work for me.

I don't have one yet, but I noticed this model in a previous thread. As far as speed is concerned, since it splits in both directions it's going to be almost twice as fast as a single direction splitter (running at the same flow rate). They also have a lifter attachment that lifts the wood off the ground for you. With the four way splitting wedge, it seems like it would split faster than a single operator could keep up with. Available as standalone or 3PH.
