3 sided shed

   / 3 sided shed #31
This shed is 14' deep ,16' between posts in front 6x12" beam, ruff 2x6 rafters 2' centers full 1x6" strapping 12" centers 12' high in front 8' at back approx. 3/12 pitch. Building is 10 years old now and had over 5' of heavy snow a few times no sags & no leaks. Metal roof with heavy felt paper under still gets condensation with the right winter conditions twice so far.

Does it really matter how much slope you put on a roof in snow country if it's less then 4:12? Seems to me that every time I'm in the mountains, all the buildings have much steeper pitches and they are covered in snow. At what pitch does snow come off a roof?

When the snow is really piled high, it's usually very cold and the snow is pretty light. It really gets heavy in the spring when it's mostly ice. It will slide off or drain off as it melts on the bottom from the weight. The problem with a low slope roof is that, as it melts, it forms ice dams and won't drain. So you essentially have water standing on roof, which is bad whether there are joints or not. We very seldom see lap joints on pole barns now that 40' sheets are available but the recommendation where I get steel is still a minimum 3 in 12. I'm not saying a shallower slope won't work, but the suppliers here say the 40/50 year warranty doesn't apply.

I have seen something similar with shingles, where you can got to low or higher slope than recommended (like on a gambrel)...if you double the underlayment thickness and can live with half (or no) warranty.

My woodshed is just a shed roof, one slope. Any pics of how to frame the front small roof.

I built several very similar to this
first was for tractor over winter but eventually added a fold down awning for big snowstorms in winter.
shed is 10 foot deep and 22 ft wide 8 ft high at front and 6ft at back.
lagged down to double height 6x6 at bottom
awning adds another 7 ft of shade in summer

smaller one is 6 ft deep and 11 ft wide they are working out great
