Might of had some wind here. Near new 600# rope & bent the sheet metal rifle stock. Pole it's self doing fine.
Rope will be replaced with a small steel cable.

Yeah, there might have been some breeze there...

Regarding you use of cable for the halyard... I would be hesitant to do that if the pulley in the truck is plastic. My pulley was nothing to be proud of, and the *last* thing you want to do is have to replace the truck.

I've switched to a rope with a very thin cable inside of it.

The pulley is either alum. or steel, can't remember for sure. Need to lay the pole down again & straighten the stock. Will put a reinforcing strap on it.

May even replace the flag. :laughing:

I love seeing the patriotism inspired by the display of our flag...but I despise seeing an ill flown stars and stripes...

There are rules and guidelines covering the display of the American flag and in my experience about half of those I see are are displaying more of a disrespect than the opposite...regardless of intention...

A couple of my flag peeves are torn/tattered flags and flags flown at night that are not lighted...both are violations of flag etiquette...and IMO show more disrespect than respect for our flag and what it represents...

I went up to 3/8" after having so many problems with the 5/16" nylon halyard fraying and wearing out quickly.

The toughest part about using the wire core rope, is knotting it. A square knot simply won't work. I found this helpful video demonstrating a proper knot for this application:

Yes it flies 24 / 7. But being over 100 feet from any electric outlet there are no night lights.

I think you show more disrespect to people flying a flag than they do by flying it at night or not instantly changing it when it has some damage.
Ever see pictures or films of WW2 Navy ships. Many of those flags were pretty well beat up.

Crash...The timing of my post was just coincidental with your post/pics...I am aware that the elements wear on flags...I was not targeting your flag per se...

However...when individuals take it upon themselves to install a pole and display the national flag they should also be ready to accept the responsibilities of doing so...

i.e., if you are unable to light the flag in hours of darkness then it is the duty of the display owner to raise and lower the flag daily...

Also there are guidelines for when a flag has become so deteriorated that it should be replaced...

As for the WWII statement...all naval vessels have color guard personnel...more likely than not the flags you see depicted in poor condition are that way because immediate replacements were not in stores and they flew the best they have onboard...

Sorry if it sounds like I'm try to start an argument. I do know about the flag rules, even how to fold it, & dispose of worn out or dirty flags. When in high school was on the flag team that put up & took down the flag.

Some of us have to do the best we can with what we have. Tried to get a power box in that area. Power Co said OK, but has to be cleared with the county. County says only can do with a building permit, $350 up. About the same price for wire to carry electric out there.

Those Navy boys were proud of their battered flag. It showed they had been to he!! & back. Would not have traded them for a new flag eve if they had one.

Just a grouchy old fart that believes in live & let live. As long as it isn't something serious. Besides that I'm getting use to you Oregon boys.:laughing:

FWIW...
My first experience with (civilian) color guard duties was in cub scouts...which led to being selected to perform flag duties in elementary school...starting in the 4th grade I was responsible for raising and lowering the school flag every morning...
....something I will never forget is the Monday following the JFK assassination...I went into the principal's office and asked if I should fly the flag at half staff...and he said no so I flew it full staff...later that afternoon when I went to lower the flag it had been lowered to half staff...

Have thought about solar lights. Looked at that one, don't think it would last, sun here eats plastic much too fast to be practical. And it would increase my already high wind load. A ground based unit would be better & easy to replace. Or when possible run some 110 current out there. Actually want to run 220V so it can be used of most anything.

In the back ground of the picture is an old chop saw used for wood cutting. Pain in the back side lowering or raising the pole.

Crash is yours schedule 80 pipe? If so it will bend. My neighbor put on up that was two sections of sch 80 and it started to bend the first blow we had. Later it uprooted the concrete base and fell over, so it was re-planted with more 'crete. A couple of years later it is now laying on the ground again. I really think you will have to bite the bullet and get a proper tapered pole. I have the cheapo aluminium sectioned flag pole and it has bent over once at the ground, so I cut it off and re-set it. One of these days I am going to buy a real flag pole.

Pipe is thick wall water pipe (Schedule 40??), its held up for several years now.
Tried a thick wall aluminum pipe & it folded up very quickly
Post it is bolted to has never moved. Just set deep into the dirt. 4 Maybe 5 feet.

so, I'm hearing those telescoping poles (maybe not so tall as 30', but 20'?) may not stand up to the wind, especially if you hang more than one flag on them during the windy days? really wanted to put one in this spring, and thought those ez telescoping poles (Telescoping Flagpoles, Flagpoles & Flags By Uncommon USA) were the ticket. now waffling.

I've had a 20' and 25', 25' folded over with 2 - 3' x 5' flags. The 20' telescoping pole lasted 5 yrs. before it destroyed the internal plastic bushings and died.
