$300,000 pet goat settlement

Poor peanut… had to kill him to protect him from humans.
From what everyone is saying on FB, it appears that the person who called in the complaint on Peanut is a local girl from here in East Texas. I'm working on a house in Longview right now, and that's where she lives.

When she made the complaint, she bragged about it because she felt that Peanut might have rabbis. After everyone found out that she did this, she apologized and closed all her accounts.

Yeah, I'm firmly undecided on the goat one. It sounded like the old owner wanted to keep the animal and the new owner was fine with it. But I have no idea on how the auction was run. I've never been part of these types of events.

I am not undecided that the parents failed in their duty to teach their daughter and guide her through the process. She should not have been placed in this predicament. They should have explained what the sale was, in terms that the child could understand, BEFORE agreeing to sell the animal. Then place the onus on the child to decide if she wanted to proceed, then help her through the hard time she would have after.

4H and similar is about learning…

Plenty of lessons learned.

The 300k is a settlement as opposed to a judgement.

I heard about a Real Estate guy with a high opinion of his property’s value getting a loan and paying back the bank as agreed and later being ordered to pay 450 million in damages… 450 million.

Do it’s easy to see how a high profile case can have a ripple effect…

In goat gate the buyer declined the goat and meat…

Parents failed. Child whined and parents gave in. The whole process is very clear in 4-H and is the responsibility of the 4-H leaders and parents to make sure everybody understands. It is not like this all happened in a weeks time. When the girl started to back out it was time for the parents to remove her from the process so she could grieve. Wait till she grows up now.

And shame on everybody else and wasting tax payers money. The judge is just as incompetent.

I don’t blame the sheriff, I agree with Eddie and his take on it. It’s more on the auction and the new owner for not letting it go. The entire thing was a waste of everybody’s time and money.

I don't have a goat in this race, though I agree that the coverage seems to suggest that there were a number of missed opportunities and lessons. (I've been watching the news on it since shortly after it started.)

One thing that does stand out to me as a livestock owner in a highly urban state is how seriously livestock theft is taken in California. Of course, Texas "deadly force" covers night time livestock theft pretty seriously with legally permitted lethal force.

Still, the last legal hangings for livestock theft in California were just after it became a state, for horse theft.

All the best,

Peter

when i read about this months ago, the girl had returned (or refused i forget exactly) the money to the buyer and wanted to keep the goat. the buyer was ok with this decision. it was the fare board that refused to reverse the sale.

The judge that issued the warrant?

I don’t think a judge ruled as this is reported as a settlement.

Searching property for a misdemeanor without a warrant is a rookie move…

Maybe they were tired after a 10 hour drive to the first location?

We have raised 4H pigs and cattle… no issues.

I do agree it’s in the parent ad a child does not have the ability to contract or said another way the contract would not be enforceable… with a few exceptions such as the necessities of life or being an emancipated minor.

I can see how the initial events could easily happen with a child in 4H. I was raised in 4H, and in my opinion the Fair Board dropped the ball by not allowing the sale to be reversed (as agreed to by the seller and buyer). It is my understanding that the Fair was offered to be made whole (cut from auction).
The Fair Board should have (at worst) banned the family from auctioning livestock in the future.

The actions of the Sheriff's Dept were ridiculousy over the top for the first attempt to seize the animal, then in violation of the constitution in seizing it at the second location.
